We have received more than half of the contributions necessary to match the $20,000 grant awarded to us by the New York Conservancy Sacred Sites Program. The largest gift to the marching grant was $2,000 from a member. The smallest was $10 from a non-member. We also received two $1,000 gifts ~ one from a woman who has only been in the church once, and the other from a man who has only been in the church a few times. Neither are members. The rest must come from you. You can see from these figures that there is no wealthy mega-donor who is going to bail us out of our need to repair the roof so that we don't have to bail ourselves our of water from the inevitable and growing leaks. Please write "matching grant" on your check and send your church contribution to:

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION:
SAFETY IN THE SANCTUARY AND THE SUNDAY SCHOOL
It is hard to not notice, and unwise to disregard the recent attacks on a rabbi's Hanukkah party and yet another shooting at a church reported last weekend. Here is some of what your church has done: I have been trained by Homeland Security about church safety. Consequently, for over a year now, the back doors are always locked at 10am sharp. The east front doors are never open, so that we can watch the west front door more closely. Jose, our custodian, is always standing there before and when service begins. The Deacons have been instructed never to sit with their backs to the front door so they always see people coming in. These and more precautions have been initiated for the sanctuary and the Sunday School. We held a "Safety in the Sanctuary" discussion and training in our church, led by Homeland Security, that was, unfortunately, poorly attended. We can further address these concerns if you wish. Meanwhile, here is a link to the free, recorded Practical Resources for Churches (PRC) webinar I led, titled, "An Ounce of Prevention: Safety in the Sanctuary" on which is plenty of resources and suggestions ~

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
We hope everyone had a terrific Christmas! The Children had so much fun at the 4pm Christmas Eve Family Service. Even the adults enjoyed shaking their bells while singing and giving and receiving silly gifts. We were all so proud and touched by McKenna when we heard her recite the Lord's Prayer. The children also sang two songs, The Little Drummer Boy and Jingle Bells.
This week we had learned about the shepherds who were the first to hear of Jesus' birth from an angel. The shepherds were excited to spread the Good News of the birth. The children had a fun time spreading the Good News in a tag game they played in the gym to let out some vacation energy!
Next week we will be learning about Jesus' Baptism by John the Baptist and the never-ending love God has for us.
We hope everyone enters 2020 with an open heart and a clear mind.
Wishing everyone a blessed New Year!
Blessings Always,
Ms. Chrissy and Ms. Ann

The Beginnings of our Sunday School, Continued:
The Sabbath (Sunday) School was at the Pine Street (the third) Church, where the children were first recognized at a regular morning service. The service was in celebration of the first Children's Day, the second Sunday in June 1887. We know that the basement area of this church served as a combined Sunday School and social room. In the spirit of "the more the merrier," the children from The Chapel in East Patchogue, joined those at Pine Street for a November Rally Day. One hundred eighty children and teachers attended. George Ackerly lent a piano to the Sunday School and the room for this special occasion was "carpeted and benches long used by the Sunday School replaced by chairs."
About this time an international youth organization called Christian Endeavor was rapidly spreading its influence across the United States. By 1889 Christian Endeavor had established a chapter in the Pine Street Church. It became the major Christian fellowship and discussion group for all Protestant young people in the Patchogue area. Its influence on both young adults and grade school children (when Young People's Christian Endeavor was formed), lasted until the early 1930's. These records and the recollections of George F. Homan at the dedication of the Main Street church are all we have until 1893 when the story at our commodious Brownstone begins.
The next one hundred years saw the children's relationship to the adult church change from a presence of little recorded note to the establishment of a new church board, with the recognition and voting powers equal to the other governing boards in the church.
