BREAKING NEWS ABOUT THE UPCOMING OPEN HOUSE AND THE NEW YORK CONSERVANCY OF HISTORIC SITES
The Congregational Church of Patchogue, 95 East Main Street, has received $20,495 from 65 donors as of 2/6/20 and has thus exceeded the $20,000 required match in order to receive the $20,000 grant from the New York Conservancy for the repair of our roof. The breakdown of the receipts is as follows:
- two $2,000 gifts
- eight $1,000 gifts (3 of which are from non-members);
- six $500 gifts;
- five $300 gifts;
- nine $200 gifts;
- seven $100 gifts;
- twenty-three gifts under $99
- The largest gift was $2,000
- The smallest was two gifts of $10.
- Some of the proceeds came from donations from photograph and wine sales.
- The average of these gifts was $315. This success came from many persons who cared to donate, not from a couple of large benefactors. Many hands and hearts built and launched this initiative. Congratulations to all those who have contributed since February 6, 2020!
While the matching grant was a success; the fact is that the repair of the roof exceeds $40,000. We will continue to solicit and accept contributions from inside and outside the congregation. We believe there are people and businesses in the community, including some of you who have not yet contributed, who are willing to help us to maintain our 126-year-old, National Registry of Historic Places church.
There will be a Sacred Sites Open House at our church on Saturday, May 16, 2020 between 10am and 2pm with a free, one-hour concert at noon. A brief history, tour of the church and refreshments will be available throughout the four-hour period.
Contributions may be made to the Congregational Church of Patchogue, 95 East Main Street, Patchogue, NY 11772 with the notation Roof Repair Fund in the memo section.
On behalf of the congregation, thank you very much!
Rev. Dwight Lee Wolter, pastor

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
The children have been learning stories about leaders from the Old Testament. We learned about Deborah, a woman leader among the Israelites, and David, the young shepherd who was chosen to be king. God was able to see into their hearts and determine that they would become good leaders. We discussed good leadership characteristics such as being kind, loving, brave, witty, caring, and strong.
The children reflected on themselves by decorating a figure on how they appear on the outside, and on another figure, they wrote in white crayon what people cannot see by just looking at their outward appearance. It was a great exercise to understand that it isn't all about what is on the outside, but how you are on the inside that really matters. The children also created poems of praise to thank God for all he has done and are posted by the classroom.
Also, a friendly reminder that there will be
NO Sunday School class on February 16th, but will resume on February 23rd. We hope the children will be well rested after their winter break and we look forward to seeing them then!
Blessings Always,
Ms. Ann and Ms. Chrissy

A Note from the Historian:
Many things have changed in the past 227 years of the existence of this church and other things have not. We are still a self-governing church and we must as members exercise our right as members to meet and vote at the Annual Congregational Meeting to continue the operation of this church.
On Sunday, February 9, 2020, we could not hold our annual meeting due to the lack of a quorum: a number of members set at the number of 35. It usually only lasts for an hour to an hour and a half and is an insignificant amount of time in the scheme of things but a very important amount of time in the life of this church. The meeting will be rescheduled. It is required under our incorporation.
The Congregational Church:
Its Historical Development
The Congregational Church of Patchogue is a community Church, in that it is not subject to control by any other organization so long as it conforms to the general laws of the State of New York and the United States of America.
It manages its own affairs, both spiritual and temporal; but it is affiliated with the Suffolk Association of Congregational Churches, the New York State Conference of Congregational and Christian Churches, and the National Council of Congregational Churches.
The Church was founded on January 14, 1793, as an independent organization; and it has retained its independence of outside control throughout the 150 years of its existence...
The Patchogue Congregational Church has always been noted for its liberality in its doctrinal principles, and its independence in the management of its of its internal affairs. It now (1943) has a membership of about 510 persons; but a large group of its non-members contribute their time and money to the support of its religious educational and social activities.
