A SILENT, CANDLELIT, WALKING MEDITATION IN OUR SANCTUARY ON ASH WEDNESDAY

We will gather on Ash Wednesday, February 26th at 7pm. In the Reception Room for a time of simple songs, hymns, prayer, silence, sharing of the bread and cup, and entering into the awe, mystery and majesty of the season known as Lent, of which Ash Wednesday is the beginning. Lent is a time of introspection, self-appraisal, atonement and preparation of the mind and spirit. Lent prepares us for, and culminates in, the resurrection of Christ, and of us ~ that is known as Easter. See you on Ash Wednesday, February 26th at 7pm.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

This week, the children heard the story of Josiah, the eight year-old king of Israel. He possessed qualities of a good leader. While restoring the temple, a scroll was found.  Josiah realized that the people of Israel had not been following God's law. He urged his people to once again be faithful to God and to follow the Commandments. We went over some bible verses to live by and had a tasty activity of edible scrolls.  We spread some cream cheese on a tortilla and inscribed words to live by on them.  Then of course ate up the yumminess! (See below: "be kind")

We want to thank Rev. Mary who spoke with the children a little bit about Transfiguration. We all change for the better when we accept God in our lives.

Next week to start off the first Sunday of Lent, we will be learning about the Beatitudes, which are well-known teachings of Jesus. "Beatitude" means blessing. They helps us live in peace with one another.

Great job, Aaron, who was acolyte for the first time this past Sunday!

  Blessings Always,
Ms. Ann and Ms. Chrissy

FROM THE HISTORIAN

The Beginnings of our Sunday School, Continued:

Patchogue is growing. Automobiles made travel easier. The Chapel in East Patchogue closed its doors and transferred, along with its records and membership, the pupils and teachers of the Sunday School to the Brownstone.

As the influence of Christian Endeavour began to fade and the Great Depression of the 30's spread, a new young people's fellowship and discussion group developed at our church. Based on an idea from our new minister, the Reverend John Robert Gee (1929-1936), it was called the Forum and invited all between the ages of 15 and 22 to join with other Protestant, Jewish, and Catholic young people for an evening of fellowship and discussion. The group became known throughout the village as intelligent, modern young people eager to serve and help in whatever way would benefit others. The upper east balcony room was set aside and dedicated to their use. While this room has been used for other purposes from time to time, future generations of high school youth have again and again reclaimed it as their own.

The early 1930's were good years in the Sunday School. Dr. Mordecai Overton was the superintendent. Under his leadership, and guided by the Reverend Gee, the Sunday School was reorganized and modernized. The enrollment was 240, and we have the first mention of an orchestra under the direction of Mrs. Eugene (Ruth) Rogers. Throughout this century, the choir, orchestra and dance programs highlighted the teaching of the Word.
