FROM THE HISTORIAN
A continuation of a presentation given by Nan Lechtrecker in 1976:
As it turned out, Aunt Rebecca was the only one with confidence enough to bring an umbrella to the Meeting House. The meeting began with a long meter hymn followed by one of Currain's long, wordy prayers. It was extremely hot, the air was oppressive. Women used their bonnets as fans; the Deacons began to nod, then: "Currain asked Brother Jones to pray - he prayed for half an hour, but no one heard him ask for rain or even one small shower!" Then Brother Green said, " ... he might as well - but whether he prayed for rain or not, no one there could tell!" Brother Green held forth for half an hour until, some though, Currain was fast asleep, others gave him benefit of the doubt, allowing he only nodded to keep the flies away. When brother Green was done, Currain said he hoped that some of the women would see fit to take part.
There was a long silence, then a rustle of skirts as Aunt Rebecca came forward and knelt to pray - Faith cleared the way of all obstacles: "Help, Mighty God," she said, "for vain is the help of man, forgive our sins - blot our transgressions out - our lives are in thy hands." There was not a single nodding head or heavy eyelid as the congregation listened intently to Aunt Rebecca's prayer.
To be continued.
Part of a presentation given by Nan Lechtrecker and written by Jere Austin, Church Historian, in 1976 in honor of the Bicentennial of the United States of America.
