THE SERENITY PRAYER
Many people know the Serenity Prayer, but few people know where it came from. It was written by Reinhold Niebuhr, a theologian, ethicist, commentator on politics and public affairs, and professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York City (my alma mater) for more than 30 years. Niebuhr was one of America's leading public intellectuals for several decades of the 20th century and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964. He wrote several books and spoke frequently about the places where religion, politics and public policy meet. The historian, Arthur Schlesinger Jr., described Niebuhr as "the most influential American theologian of the 20th century" and Time posthumously called Niebuhr "the greatest Protestant theologian in America since Jonathan Edwards." And yet he is, perhaps, best known for this simple prayer.

Starting this coming Sunday, October 13th, we will explore The Serenity Prayer in three parts:
October 13th
"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change..."
(serenity, acceptance and change)

October 20th
"courage to change the things I can..."
(serenity, courage and change)

October 27th
"and wisdom to know the difference."
(serenity, wisdom and discernment).

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

On World Communion Day, the children participated in a lesson on Communion.  We took a journey, and discovered that the bread and juice provide us with characteristics that follow Jesus's teachings such as being loving, compassionate, gentle, forgiving, humble, unselfish, and keeping faith.  This lesson seemed to have reached the children's hearts and we were glad to have had a chance to teach this to them.

We wanted to thank Ms. Toni Dean for inviting us into the Children's Library on 9/29, and speaking with them.  The children enjoyed browsing the books and checked some out too!  The Lego corner is also always a big hit!

Please mark your calendars that there is no 10:00 AM Sunday School on 10/27 due to the Suffolk County Marathon. However, children and their families are invited to join Pastor Dwight for a potluck supper at 5:30 PM and/or evening worship service at 7:00 PM.

Blessings,
Ms. Chrissy and Ms. Ann
Sunday School Co-Directors

FROM THE HISTORIAN

This photograph was taken of our Sunday School students, staff and the Rev. Sherman W. Havens and his family on the front steps of the church sometime between 1902 and 1911.

A short article about our Sunday School and their contributions to our sanctuary dated January 1940:

A special dedication service with parents will be held at 9:45 a.m. Sunday at the Congregational church. This service will be led by Dudley R. Merrill, chairman of the Parents-Church committee. Edward C. Jenik, director will give the opening address and the formal service of dedication will be led by the Rev. A. H. Cooke. Among the furnishings and appointments to be consecrated at this service will be the new platform, the altar table, altar cloth, cross and candlesticks. Many other additions to the worship atmosphere will be mentioned by Mr. Jenik.

Dolly Searles, my helper and living keeper of the history of this church told me that the parents of the Sunday School children formed the Parents-Church committee and raised funds for the facilities of the church
