September is National Fall Prevention Awareness

Falls are a leading cause of injury, but they are not an inevitable part of aging.

So what is Fall Prevention?

Fall prevention refers to the strategies, programs, and lifestyle changes designed to reduce the risk of falls, especially in older adults or people with health conditions that affect balance, strength, or mobility.

Since falls are one of the leading causes of injury in seniors, fall prevention focuses on avoiding accidents before they happen by addressing risk factors.

Here’s a clear breakdown:

What Fall Prevention Involves

Home Safety Modifications

  • Removing loose rugs or clutter
  • Adding grab bars in bathrooms
  • Improving lighting in hallways and stairs
  • Using non-slip mats

Health & Medical Care

  • Regular vision and hearing checks
  • Reviewing medications (some can cause dizziness or drowsiness)
  • Managing chronic conditions like diabetes, arthritis, or blood pressure issues

Physical Strength & Balance

  • Exercises that build leg strength and core stability (yoga, tai chi, strength training)
  • Physical therapy for balance training
  • Using mobility aids (canes, walkers) when necessary

Lifestyle Adjustments

  • Wearing supportive, non-slip footwear
  • Staying hydrated and well-nourished
  • Avoiding alcohol or sedating medications that affect balance

Why It Matters

  • Falls are a major cause of fractures, head injuries, and loss of independence.
  • Preventing falls not only protects physical health but also reduces fear of falling, which itself can lead to reduced mobility.

In short: Fall prevention is about making environments safer, strengthening the body, and managing health to lower the risk of falling.
