Health Care Facility Tours
Monday, June 3rd
Hale Makua
Hale Makua continues to provide quality care for Maui's Community, especially our kupunas and disabled individuals! Students from across Maui County were educated about the growing needs of the health care workers due to Maui's County's incoming aging population.

There are an estimated 180 Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) that are currently employed at Hale Makua, most of whom choose to continue down the nursing pathway to become Registered Nurses (RNs).

Thank you to Hale Makua, Kahului Staff especially to Ted Tucker, Teana Kaho'ohanohano, Danielle Sanchez, and Tina King for creating a meaningful and fulfilling tour.
"Just because you have a particular goal, doesn't mean you can't change. Just know that you can be flexible, and that healthcare is flexible too. You are your own self-limiting factor. Only you can go for that opportunity. Don't be afraid!"

- Kelly Yokouchi, Director of Nursing at Hale Makua
YUCKY GERMS! During the tour, students participated in a hand washing activity that taught them the proper way to wash hands. Under a UV black light, students had the ability to see how well they did to get rid of the germs.
Maui Memorial Medical Center
"Let's find people on Maui to treat people on Maui, let's keep healthcare local. We all need you to seriously think about going into healthcare."

- Michael Rembis, CEO
The Maui Health Care System health care team provided and all inclusive hands-on "GERM" activity, behind the scene tours, and introduced a panel of healthcare professionals who shared their experiences with the student of real life medics to connect students.

Students were able to hear about saving lives, bringing new life into the world, and coping with families when a loved one passes. This tour allowed students to experience first hand challenges, opportunities, and rewards of health professions.

Thank you to Maui Health Care System team for the amazing medical experience for our future medical students.

Pacific Cancer Institute
Innovative technologies showed students an amazing outcome in delivering high-quality cancer care! Students had access to tour the Pacific Cancer Institute with Brenton Turner MSHA, CMD, RT(R)(T), Stephen, Sr. Lead Radiation Therapist, Medical Dosimetrist Mihai Ene, and Registered Nurse Janice Yoshikawa.

Students learned about the
highly skilled therapists and dosimetrist that accurately plan and deliver the most appropriate radiation treatments at the highest standards available. These cutting edge technologies such as robotics are becoming the future of care among cancer treatment; therefore it is imperative for professionals to remain connected to technology.

Thank you to the Pacific Cancer team for their valuable insights and introducing technologies that will shape the future of cancer care .

"Identify how you can turn a passion into a healthcare career, and recognize that healthcare offers many career options beyond doctors or nurses."

University of Hawaii Maui College Nursing Program
Students can achieve a degree in the healthcare field by enrolling in UH Maui College Nursing or Dental Program. Students were able to tour the campus facility and practice hands-on clinical skills with UHMC’s patient high-fidelity mannequins.

Registered Nurse Instructor Amy Turner taught students how to identify various stages of swelling, the meaning of varied pupil dilation, what congested lungs sound like, and how to perform CPR on infants and adults. This tour provided students practical skills in a clinic-based environment.
From newborns to the elderly, students practiced CPR on training manikins at UHMC's Simulation Room!

Youth Health Care Camp
Tuesday, June 4th
The Maui County Partnership and STEMworks partnered with the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine's AHEC team and the University of Hawaii Maui College Nursing Program to expose and educate 75 middle, high, and college students in interactive activities and lab s in the Healthcare Field!
Casting Your Arm Up
Injuries and broken bones can be prevented, but sometimes they're inevitable! We've all broken a bone, or know someone who has.
Students placed a cast on their partners, demonstrating what is done when someone needs a cast.
Above: student wraps another's wrist during the casting session.
Extracting the DNA...of a Fruit?
From within us to what we eat, DNA is in everything! But who knew you could extract the DNA of a banana? Students put their gloves on and went through the procedure of how to release and extract DNA.

The Powerful Resource of Clinical Skills
When you go to a medical office, some of the things the nurses and doctors do is take your blood pressure, heart rate, and listen to your breathing.
With the help of the AHEC team, students were able to obtain these clinical skills. Students put on stethoscopes to listen to each other’s heart beat and lungs and take each other’s blood pressure.
Above: Students Lindsey Kimoto and Alexis Joy Viloria learning how to take their blood pressure.
Makey Makey Anything into a Key
Fruits, foil, tea bags, you name it! With a little trouble shooting, students learned basic circuitry with the Makey-Makey kit, and turned everyday objects into computer game controllers! With this fun activity, students learned that working in the health field takes a team with different skills like engineering!
Malaria Prevention
Malaria affects almost half of the world's population, and this session focused on what measures can be used to prevent the spread of this infectious disease. Students used preventative measures such as insecticides to eradicate malaria in their case-study!
CPR,First Aid,AED and HIPAA Awareness

Wednesday, June 5th
Let's get certified! CPR, First Aid, AED, and HIPAA certified!

23 students received the American Heart Association: Heartsaver, First Aid/CPR/AED Training, facilitated by Leomer Domingo.
This 6 hour course taught students skills on how to save lives.
See what students had to say about this
Summer Healthcare Adventure!
"The fact that we got hands-on experience makes this whole healthcare week extremely valuable."

- Stephanie Badillo, Lana'i Elementary and High School Student
"It was so impactful when we went to the hospital and learned about the different careers it takes to run one. I didn't realize how many people worked for Maui Memorial Medical Center!"

-Chaenel Deluna, Moloka'i High School student pictured with the pink stethoscope, Mikayla Villanueva, Kihei Charter student
"Programs like these are valuable because Maui County is so isolated, and it's important for people like us--middle and high schoolers--to have experiences like this one before going off to college. For me, the ability to reach out into the community to find work opportunities and gain experiences has been the best part about this healthcare camp."

-Kazzandra Anton, Baldwin High School Student
"I think that this will be the most fun I have all summer!"
 - 6th grader from Ka Waihona o Ka Naauao
Mahalo to our wonderful and inspiring mentors and volunteers that are creating meaningful experiences and shaping the lives of Maui County students interested in health care.
