Meet Women in Aviation's War Eagle Chapter
Above: Members of the WAI War Eagle Chapter at their 2019 Girls in Aviation Day
Women in Aviation International is a non-profit, co-ed organization created to advance female involvement in every aspect of the aviation industry. The War Eagle chapter was formed in 2016 to encourage that vision here at Auburn University. The chapter has sought to do so by involving members in professional development, community outreach, and community service.

The War Eagle chapter aims to increase the professional development of members by inviting guest speakers from all across the industry to speak about what their particular jobs are like. This semester alone, the chapter has hosted Bobby Fitzpatrick, former Blue Angel; Latessa Meader, C-130 pilot; Joseph Davidson (’18) and Alan Burgess, Envoy Air; and Bobby Brown II, C.M. (’10), Portland International Jetport’s Deputy Director of Operations and Maintenance.

Community outreach is a large part of the chapter. Throughout the year, the chapter hosts the local Boys & Girls Club at the airport and sends members to local elementary schools to talk about aviation. Once a year, the chapter will host an annual Girls in Aviation Day (GIAD). GIAD includes guest speakers, activity booths, and a static display consisting of aircraft flown in by pilots of the Auburn Aviation community. Last year, founding member Hampton McDonald (’18) flew in a CRJ-200 on behalf of Endeavor Air. This year, the War Eagle Chapter is working on submitting content to Women in Aviation’s “Aviation for Girls” app to participate in a virtual GIAD.

This semester, the War Eagle chapter has volunteered with the East Alabama Food Bank and Alabama Habitat for Humanity. The chapter has plans to continue volunteering with these organizations and is looking for more ways to help out the Auburn/Opelika area.

What makes the War Eagle chapter so special is the sense of community offered to its members. In addition to weekly meetings, members participate in chapter-hosted events such as an annual aviation formal, volleyball tournament nights, Halloween gatherings, and dollar dinners!

Thank you to all of the companies and individuals that helped make the 2nd Annual Auburn Business Aviation Days a success. During the virtual event, students were able to participate in a Q&A with our keynote speaker, Mr. Ed Bolen, and listen to business aviation professionals guest speak in each of their aviation classes.
