RECAP OF INTERFACE WITH SUPERVISOR HEINZ

Last week, we were impressed with Heinz’s in-depth knowledge of the pandemic since he now has experience both on the medical and policy sides. He stressed that while numbers seem to be plateauing, we must remain diligent and continue to heed the advice from medical experts.

On a separate topic, while he preferred to only approve a 12-24 month contract extension for County Administrator Huckelberry with additional evaluations, he ultimately supported the four-year contract extension, which included a significant wage cut due to other concessions made.
JANUARY'S NEW MEMBERS
EMERGING LEADERS COUNCIL SPOTLIGHT
A special component to membership in the Emerging Leaders Council (ELC) is mentorship by an accomplished senior executive from the Southern Arizona community. This month, ELC members will be paired with their mentors and begin a year-long relationship where they will connect with our community, grow professionally, and work on self-defined goals—together.

ELC mentorship chair, Isaac Figueroa, commented on the ELC mentorship experience, “Aspiring to emulate the success they have created, as mentees, we do our best to offer them our time and effort in exchange for their wisdom and experience. Mentorships aren't one-sided relationships but rather mutually beneficial where both the mentor and mentee have something of value they can contribute.”

ELC thanks our mentors for dedicating their time, talent and energy to our organization as we look forward to building mentorship relationships this year.
FEATURED MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
The University of Arizona Center for Innovation (UACI) announced that a record number of startups are enrolled in the incubation program. Each one of the 40+ tech and science-based startups are developing solutions for real-world problems and have a strong desire to make a significant difference in the local and global communities through innovation.

“We have seen a large influx of startup teams who have a deep desire to make a significant difference in the local and global community through innovation. It is extremely rewarding to help them along their path. No matter what stage, our program is designed to meet them at their need,” shared Eric Smith, executive director of UACI.

OUR APPRECIATION FOR COUNCIL MEMBER PAUL DURHAM

Council Member Paul Durham submitted his resignation yesterday from the Tucson City Council. He proactively engaged with the Chamber to discuss land use and development challenges that businesses across our community faced. We appreciated his willingness to engage in conversations, to listen, and to find solutions, even when we disagreed, which exemplified his positive leadership. We wish Paul the best as he pursues new endeavors and challenges as he enters post-public official life on March 1.
