FROM THE PEN OF THE PRESIDENT!

  A CONVERSATION  WITH
PRESIDENT SIMMONS

After receiving calls and emails from frustrated and sometimes confused alumni regarding the recent appointments and hires on the campus I felt it best for clarity to contact our University President, Ruth J. Simmons. President Simmons and I spoke for practically an hour discussing PVAMU. Below you will find answers to my more pertinent questions:
What is the process for hiring a University President in the Texas A&M System?
When it comes to hiring a university president there is no search because PVAMU does not have a board of trustees to search for candidates. Alumni REPRESENTATION may be requested but the Texas A&M Regents make the sole decisions. They have all the power.
What role does alumni play when hiring university faculty and staff?
It's highly unusual and unlikely for alumni to participate in the hiring of campus based positions. One reason is the expertise needed to evaluate applicants. For example, an alumnus that serves or has served as a university provost may be asked to CONSULT with the president when the new provost is hired. Again, expertise is needed.
What can the NAA do to assist the university?
Alumni must understand they need to be on board to helping. Disparaging remarks from Alumni hurt the university. Alumni are asked to provide input that is helpful and to lead the charge in demanding excellence from the university; looking for the best people to teach, for research, management and operations and that these are in-line with what we offer students.

The next drop-date is January 31st, the 12th day of class. I know you are asking, "How are we able to discover the student's financial situation?" In order to receive the emergency funds, students will be asked to sign a waiver of information to funding sources such as the NAA and the PVAMF. This will be a 3rd party scholarship, meaning that funds will go directly to the treasury to remit payment for students and not-interfere with financial aid awards.  What's in it for me you ask? Some of you may remember the days of standing in the financial aid office praying for a miracle. You could be a young person's miracle today.

donate online or by mailing your donation to P.O. Box 2875 - Prairie View, Texas - 77446. The NAA is a registered 501 (c)(3) charity. Make your check payable to PVAMU-NAA. Thank you in advance. We appreciate your support.
