Northeastern Technical College’s Class of 2023 practical licensed nursing graduates swept their National Council Licensure Examinations with 100 percent passing on the first attempt.
NETC’s Class of 2023 LPNs consisted of 12 students: Emilee Allison, of McBee; Candace Ayers, of Dillon; Madison Brown, of Ruby; Alyssa Chapman, of Bennettsville; Jessica Corizzo, of Hartsville; Hunter Gainey, of McBee; Carlin Hubbard, of Cheraw; Tara Quick, of Cheraw; Amanda Rodano, of Chesterfield; Kaleigh Thompson, of Hartsville; Nabi Watson Sr., of Cheraw; and Hailey Vaughn, of Pageland.
“It's truly commendable of the commitment our graduates have striving to be at the top early into their profession and to Northeastern Technical College’s faculty for their dedication providing excellence in nursing education,” said NETC President Dr. Kyle Wagner. “Getting these new nurses into practice as soon as possible not only benefits the institution but also the community at large, ensuring that there are enough skilled professionals available to provide essential care and support.”
The Class of 2023 is the 31st group to graduate from the program since its inception in 1993; the group took the Nightengale Pledge Nov. 30 at the Cheraw campus.

Students who enter NETC’s LPN program must pass the NCLEX to receive their license to become employed as a license practical nurse.
Students can graduate from the program prior to passing the exam but must pass the NCLEX to receive their license.
A licensed practical nurse (LPN) provides basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and physicians.
Their responsibilities include administering medication, monitoring patients' vital signs, and assisting with daily activities such as bathing and dressing.
NETC’s LPN program requires 48 semester hours of instruction in a combination of classroom and clinical settings.
Course work can be completed in two semesters and one summer term at which time students must pass the NCLEX to become a licensed practical nurse.
Students may be required to complete prerequisite coursework for program eligibility.

Riechers named NETC Vice President of Academic Affairs | |

The robots aren't likely to be taking over, but somebody needs to operate them!
Entering in his new role as Northeastern Technical Colleges Vice President of Academic Affairs in March, Dr. Derk Riechers, will continue moving NETC towards a technology advance future to include embracing artificial intelligence.
“A.I. is not a fad,” Dr. Riechers, said.
Just like the Internet changed everything from worldwide communication and commerce, artificial intelligence will be a part of our lives as well.
“The mission of a technical college is to prepare and train students for the current and future workforce,” Dr. Riechers said. “A.I. is a general technological advancement. The jobs will still be there, but the skillsets are changing.”
One of the roles Vice President of Academic Affairs plays at a technical college is developing academic programs meeting accreditation standards and the needs of the service areas – this includes keeping in regular contact with local industries meeting their training and education demands.
“With the advent of AI, every profession is using a computer and likely will be equipped with it. Our goal is to shape the future of Northeastern Technical College moving forward with our curriculum with the changes in this technology,” Dr. Riechers said.
Dr. Riechers has been instrumental in modernizing Northeastern Technical College’s Online Learning Management System since coming on board in 2018.
Dr. Riechers previously served as NETC’s Online College Director which instituted Desire 2 Learn (D2L) creating online classrooms, which kept the school operational during the Covid 19 shutdowns.
“Having our classes online made an impact for our students in a time when they needed the least amount of disruption,” Dr. Riechers said.

Dr. Riechers is a nationally recognized academic, with his research interesting focusing on technology and the operations of academic affairs.
This recognition is underscored by his invitations to present at over 100 national conferences to a variety of audiences and the various boards he serves on by his volunteering his time throughout the academic space.
Dr. Riechers expressed enthusiasm for NETC's trajectory under the leadership of its President, Dr. Kyle Wagner.
He emphasized the honor he feels in serving the public and working at NETC as Dr. Wagner has significantly propelled NETC forward during his continued tenure.
In November 2023, Riechers earned a Doctorate in Education Specializing in Higher Education: Teaching and Learning from Brenau University in Georgia.
Previously, Riechers earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in Business Economics from Francis Marion University; Master’s Degree of Science in Management and Leadership and Human Resources Development from Webster University; Master’s Degree in Business Administration and a Post-Masters Teaching Certificate from Capella University; and an Instructional Leadership Certificate from Harvard University from its Graduate School of Education

Exploring the blue yonder!
NETC administrators and staff attended the ATEC Conference (Aviation Technician Education Council) to advance the establishment of the Aviation Maintenance Program. This opportunity enabled the participants to gain insights into the steps for program development and gain connections for curriculum development, equipment procurement, and collaboration with other educational institutions. The sessions covered a wide array of topics including QA considerations for new FAA regulations, stackable credentials, equipment requirements, emerging standards, and various other subjects.

Free tax prep at
NETC Cheraw campus
NETC hosts AARP Tax-Aide as a free service for income tax preparation 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays until April 10 on the NETC Cheraw campus.
There are no age or income limits, and AARP membership is not required; the service is free. Tax-Aide is the largest free, volunteer-based tax assistance program in the United States. Annual Trailblazers Golf Tournament returns April 19 | |

Bring your clubs and A-game when Northeastern Technical College’s golf tournament returns in spring.
The Third Annual NETC Trailblazer Golf Tournament 1 p.m. April 19 at Marlboro County Golf and Recreational Complex. Space is limited to the first 20 teams.
The Trailblazer Tournament is a 4-player Captain’s Choice tournament – a $400 entry fee per team includes golfing, lunch, and beverages on the court.
Prizes will be awarded to the longest drive, closest to pin on all Par 3s, and door prizes. A putting contest starts 11 a.m. prior to the tournament’s start.
NETC Mulligan Packages are available at $20 per player that includes one mulligan and one option to hit from the red tees from any hole excluding Par 3s and Longest Drive hole.
Sponsorship opportunities are available with proceeds from the tournament dedicated to NETC’s athletic department.
"We are thrilled to be hosting this fundraising event to support our athletics program," said NETC President Dr. Kyle Wagner. "Our athletics program is an essential part of the college experience for our students, and the funds raised from the tournament will help us to continue providing high-quality sports facilities and equipment for them."

As a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), NETC offers students the opportunity to compete in several sports, including men's and women's golf, men's and women's cross country, and Esports.
The college takes pride in its athletics program, which provides students with valuable experiences and opportunities to develop essential life skills such as leadership, teamwork, and time management, Wagner said.
The golf tournament is an opportunity for individuals and organizations to support NETC's athletics program while enjoying a day of golf at one of the most scenic courses in the state.
The event is open to all levels of golfers, from beginners to experienced players – last year, 56 golfers among 14 teams competed in the Trailblazer Tournament.

Don't game as a lone wolf, NETC Esports recruiting for spring team | |

Northeastern Technical College is looking for mixed martial artists, mercenaries, professional football players, and if you have magical powers, that too.
NETC’s esports program is looking for official Trailblazers as well as casual players looking to compete in-house through the intramural program.
The number of school and intramural competitors is gaining traction with the ranks growing from Spring 2022 to Fall 2023, said NETC Esports Head Coach Tyler Nolan.
NETC Trailblazers are full-time students who maintain a minimum of 12 credit hours with at least a 2.0 grade point average, along with the college’s golf and cross-country program.
Intramural players (also known as Tier 3) are any part-time, full-time, and dual enrollment students.
All of NETC sports programs compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), the national governing body of two-year college athletics.
There are no age restrictions for players.
Esports players can compete off-campus or at Trailblazers Esports headquarters on the Cheraw campus.
In Fall 2023, the Trailblazers competed in Madden Football, Call of Duty, Fortnite, Valorant, Modern Warfare, Overwatch, and Super Smash Bros.
Competing in Fall were Lexy Deitz and Nick Oakley, of Chesterfield; David Hancock, Josh McMillon, and David Hancock, of Cheraw; Victor Barrington and Mary Blackwell, of Bennettsville; Jeremy Clark and Ethan Jones, of McBee; and Luke Byrd, of Hartsville.
Dual Enrollment students Vonta Marshall, of Bennettsville, and Zander Wagner, of Cheraw, enlisted in Intramural competition.
INTRAMURAL ESPORTS
NETC offers Intramural Esports to any full-time, part-time, and Dual Enrollment student where players can face each other one-on-one or in teams in competitive video gaming.
NETC students aren’t restricted to competing at the Esports Game room on the Cheraw campus, they can login remotely during play scheduled 6 p.m. weekdays.
