Smith receives 2023

J.G. Owens Scholarship

Northeastern Technical College student Calandra Smith received the 2023 J.G. Owens Scholarship.

Smith, from Society Hill, enters NETC pursuing an associate degree in nursing to become a registered nurse with a long-term goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.

“This is my passion. We need more good nurses in the world and I have an opportunity to become one,” she said.

Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry from Claflin University in 2008.

In 1985, J.G. “Pete” Owens was appointed to Area Commission for Northeastern Technical College, then named Chesterfield-Marlboro Technical College.

During his tenure on the commission, Owens was instrumental in establishing the curriculum for the registered nursing associate’s degree.

Owens served on the commission continuously for 30 years serving two terms as chairman until he retired from the board in 2015.

Owens retired in 2006 from B.C. Moore’s and Sons where he served as executive vice president and director of the company.

Owens was active in Cheraw serving as a mentor at Cheraw Primary; Cheraw First United Methodist treasurer, strategic planning team, and church council; and was named by NETC Student Government Association twice to receive the Outstanding Contributor to Technical Education Award.

Contributions to the J.G. Owens Scholarship Fund can be made through the NETC Foundation, which is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization, at 1201 Chesterfield Hwy, Cheraw, SC 29520. For more information, contact Erin Fann at 843.921.9616 or Lib Norton at 843.921.6902.

NETC Foundation offers tax deductible custom scholarships

Giving the gift of education can be tax-deductible; creating a scholarship in the name of a loved one is priceless.

Northeastern Technical College Foundation offers individuals, businesses, and organizations, can create and contribute to their own customized scholarship for one-time or reoccurring.

The NETC Foundation is a 401(c)3 non-profit organization with its mission since 1979 supporting Northeastern Technical College students and school projects; donations are tax-deductible.

By supporting the NETC Foundation, donors become a catalyst for positive change, creating opportunities for students that extend far beyond the classroom.

In lieu of individual scholarships, donations can be made to the NETC Foundations four major funds:

Uplift Fund: Donations directly impact students by providing scholarships and emergency relief removing unnecessary barriers to their education.

Jumpstart Fund: Donations become a part of innovation and progress by supporting the expansion and initiation of new programs.
