Trent’s Playbook: Growing Skills, Friendships, and Confidence Through Esports

Meet Trent: A Rising Star in Competitive Esports and a Proud NETC ESports Summer Camp Participant

Trent Crawford, a 15-year-old avid gamer, is no stranger to the world of competitive esports. Now entering his third year attending the NETC East Sports Summer Camp, Trent shared his journey and experiences with us, revealing how the camp and gaming have shaped his life.

A Mom’s Invitation and a Gamer’s Challenge

Trent’s introduction to the camp came from a simple question from his mom. “One day, my mom asked me if I wanted to go because I like to play video games a lot. I was like, okay, I’ll try it out.” That first visit turned into a lasting passion as Trent recalls dominating in Fortnite against his friends and quickly finding a community of like-minded gamers.

Years of Growth and Competitive Success

Although only 15, Trent has been involved in competitive gaming since he was 13, which is the minimum age required to enter tournaments. Recently, he and two friends clinched victory in a Diamond-ranked tournament. “In our first game, it was like 5-0, and then we just kept going from there,” Trent says. Winning was fun, but the experience of bonding with his teammates meant just as much.

The Impact of NETC East Sports Summer Camp

Trent credits the camp and its instructors for helping him improve his skills. “I just try my best with the games I love, and coming here has definitely made me a better player, especially at Fortnite. They have some really good players here, so it pushes me to get better.”

Besides Fortnite, Trent also enjoys playing Call of Duty, FIFA, 2K, and Rocket League. He competes in Rocket League and Fortnite.

More Than Just Gaming: Friendship and Community

One of Trent’s main goals each summer is to make new friends, and he’s happy to say that many of those friendships last beyond camp and carry over to school. “I keep my friends. Most of them are at school.” He also emphasizes the strong sense of community in esports despite the misconception that online gaming is a solitary activity. “There’s a big community in esports. Just find some good teammates and bond together. That’s how you play great.”

Looking Ahead: Dual Enrollment and Academic Success

Beyond gaming, Trent is focused on academics. An AB to all-A student, he plans to pursue dual enrollment with NETC as he enters his sophomore year. “I think I’ll be able to handle college classes,” he shares confidently. He also acknowledges that the summer camp has given him insight into what college life and the esports program might be like.

Inspiration and Advice

Trent looks up to professional players like Peter Bott and Clicks, who have inspired his own gaming journey. When asked what advice he would give to students interested in esports, he keeps it simple: “Just try it out.”

While still figuring out how to balance school and gaming, Trent remains optimistic. “I don’t really know yet, but I’ll figure it out.”

Trent’s story is a great example of how passion, dedication, and community can come together to create a rewarding experience both in esports and beyond. With the support of NETC East Sports Summer Camp and his own drive, Trent is blazing a path toward success on screen and in life.

Microbiology Students Test Their Favorite Germ Killers

Professor Schanz’s summer Microbiology class at NETC is wrapping up the semester, with students recently completing their eighth lab out of ten. This week’s experiment, titled My Favorite Germ Killer, gave students a hands-on opportunity to explore the effectiveness of common disinfectants.

Using Petri dishes inoculated with bacteria, students applied filter paper soaked in different disinfectant solutions. The goal is to observe either confluent bacterial growth or clear zones of inhibition, which would indicate how well each product works at killing or stopping the spread of bacteria.

The results will give students a visual comparison of each disinfectant’s strength. It is a practical and engaging way to apply classroom knowledge to real-world microbiological methods.

Check back next week to see which germ killers proved most effective.

NETC Hosts Ice Cream Social to Celebrate Summer and Student Connection

Students, faculty, and staff at Northeastern Technical College (NETC) gathered for a refreshing break during this summer’s Ice Cream Social. The event was filled with laughter, conversations, and plenty of sweet treats.

Held in the student commons area, the Ice Cream Social created a relaxed environment for the campus community to connect and unwind. With a variety of ice cream flavors to choose from, it was the perfect way to cool off and enjoy a moment of fun during the summer term.

Events like this are part of NETC’s ongoing commitment to student engagement and campus life. Building community, encouraging connections, and supporting students beyond the classroom remain top priorities throughout the year.
