$33.9 Million Alumni Impact and $75 Million Total Output: How Northeastern Technical College Is Transforming Lives and the Local Economy | | |
A new independent study highlights the significant contributions of Northeastern Technical College (NETC) and the South Carolina Technical College System to the state’s economy and workforce. The study finds that the SC Technical College System generates $349 million in statewide economic impact annually, supporting thousands of jobs, while NETC contributes $75.0 million in total economic output locally and supports 425 jobs.
Of this total, $33.9 million is directly driven by NETC alumni, reflecting the lasting impact of graduates who remain in South Carolina, earn competitive wages, and contribute to their communities. The total economic output captures the college’s full footprint, including operations, employee salaries, and student activity, while the alumni-driven impact shows the long-term value of education on the workforce and local economy.
The study, conducted by the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business, also shows NETC’s graduates are highly successful in the workforce. The college maintains a 93% job placement rate, with an annual enrollment of 1,968 students, and many alumni remain in South Carolina, strengthening local industries and communities.
“This study confirms what we see every day across South Carolina,” said Dr. Tim Hardee, president of the SC Technical College System. “Our colleges are not just teaching skills. They are transforming lives, building careers, and keeping talent right here in our state. That is real impact.”

Dr. Hardee added, “When students graduate from technical colleges, they are ready for the jobs of today and the careers of tomorrow. They stay in our communities, they thrive, and they fuel the economic engine of South Carolina. That is something truly worth celebrating.”
NETC’s largest programs of study include Health Professions and Related Clinical Sciences (40%), Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services (11.3%), and Precision Production (7%). Graduates see a substantial wage premium, with median annual earnings of $49,730, compared to $36,753 for the typical high school graduate, resulting in an estimated long-run wage premium of $12,977.
The college also prioritizes affordability and accessibility. NETC carries no outstanding institutional debt and has provided tuition waivers totaling nearly $551,000 over the past three years for in-state students.
“These results show that investing in technical education delivers measurable value to both students and communities,” said Interim President Erin Fann. “Graduates are thriving, employers are hiring skilled workers, and the data confirms the positive economic impact on our region."
