Dillon County Economic Group Tours NETC's Marlboro County Campus

The Dillon County Public-Private Economic Development Partnership Board recently toured the Northeastern Technical College (NETC) Marlboro County Campus to see the progress of its expansion. Phase 2 renovations are almost complete, and the campus will offer new programs starting in Fall 2025. This visit highlights the strong partnership between the college and local economic development groups, which helps improve job training and education in the area.

NETC has been working to expand its facilities to better serve the community. The college first received a $5.5 million grant from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) to create a workforce training center in Bennettsville, helping students gain skills needed for local jobs. Later, the college received an additional $1.4 million appropriation from SC Senator

Kent Williams to expand programs and support economic growth in the region.

The Dillon County Public-Private Economic Development Partnership Board is dedicated to improving the lives of Dillon County residents. Their collaboration with NETC shows a shared goal of connecting education with economic development to benefit the entire community.

The Phase 2 renovations at NETC’s Marlboro County Campus will allow the college to offer 28 programs under one roof, and attract more students, and meet the changing needs of local community. This expansion is a big step forward for education and the economy in the region, creating more career opportunities students while helping to fulfill the need for highly trained candidates to meet industry needs.

Culinary Students Jump Into The Kitchen: Making Lunch for Employees

New culinary students pose with their instructor during their first week of labs. From L to R: Dealie Williams, Instructor Sha'kira Gattison, and Ruby Brown.

Culinary students Dealie Williams of Cheraw and Ruby Brown of Bennettsville began their first week of hands-on learning under the guidance of Instructor Sha’Kira Gattison. Putting their skills to the test, the students jumped into the kitchen, preparing a soup and salad lunch for employees. This experience will be the first of many for them to practice essential techniques in a real-world setting.

Under Chef Gattison’s instruction, Dealie and Ruby focused on precision, and teamwork while preparing the lunch. From chopping vegetables for the salad to seasoning the soup, the hands-on experience reinforced the importance of time management and organization, skills they will continue to develop throughout their training.

The lunch was a success, and the experience helped to build confidence for these two new students. There will be many more lessons head, as Dealie and Ruby take their first steps towards careers in the culinary field under Chef Gattison’s mentorship.
