The Good Book Club: The Gospel of John
It is never too late to join the Good Book Club in reading the Gospel of John. Each day, from Epiphany on January 6 through Mardi Gras Day, February 25, we will read a passage from this compelling gospel. Today's reading is John 7:1-24. There are an array of resources to help you on the journey. The first step is easy: Open your Bible and start reading. To sign up for Good Book Club resources go to:

Lay Eucharistic Visitors
Mike Ballard, our School for Ministry Intern, has been working with Harwell Coale to expand our Eucharistic Visitor program. Skip Archer, Leigh Taylor and Charlotte Taylor are now licensed to serve as Eucharistic Visitors. They will begin regularly visiting members of the Cathedral family who are sick or shut-in. If you would like a visit, please call the Cathedral office at 438-1822 to request one.
Here is a little information about the history of Eucharistic Visitation. Eucharistic Visitation is at once an ancient practice and a relatively new innovation. In the first century, followers of the way of Jesus met together on Sundays, all that were able. They read scripture, prayed, and shared a meal in common, which always included bread and wine, and the remembrance of Jesus' last Supper with the disciples. At the end of the sacred meal, the leftovers were divided up and distributed among those who could not be present and those who were in need. And so, the Bread and Wine from the shared meal were taken out by visitors. As the church grew and developed, the orders of deacon, priest, and bishop took responsibility for the sharing of the Eucharist, and the distribution of food for the poor became separated from the visitation of church members with the Holy Eucharist.
The Book of Common Prayer affirms the place of the Holy Eucharist as "the principal act of Christian worship on the Lord's Day and other major Feasts," and thus the foundation of the corporate prayer of the Church. As an act of the whole community of faith, the Eucharist is a summons to all the baptized to share in the table of the Lord. This form for the distribution of Holy Communion by licensed lay persons is intended to foster a corporate sense of the Eucharist among those who, by reason of illness or infirmity, are unable to be present in their church's assembly on Sunday or some other principal feast.
How to Join the Episcopal Church
(paraphrased from The Episcopal Handbook)
By far, the most important requirement for joining the Episcopal Church is just showing up. Many Episcopal parishes are intentionally vague about assigning membership. We don't want to be known as places where weekly attendance is taken, annual contributions are tabulated, and your membership is assigned only if you pass muster. We're much less concerned about counting the people who are in, than we are about leaving someone out.
To serve as a lay minister you should be baptized in this or any Christian church, confirmed or received by a bishop of the Episcopal Church, attend services, receive Holy Communion, and make a financial commitment. Of course, some people claim membership to our churches because a long-lost relative once attended, and this is fine by us. We believe the church should reflect the open and accepting arms of Jesus.
If one is baptized in a parish, he or she automatically becomes a member. If one is already a member of an Episcopal parish and moves to another, a Letter of Transfer is typically requested. However, the paperwork generally plays second fiddle to the importance of a feeling of belonging to a parish family. Adult Inquirers and anyone else interested in learning about joining the Episcopal church should speak with Dean Gibson.
Confirmation and Reception by the Bishop will be on Sunday, April 26 during the 14th Annual Cathedral Celebration.
Last week we welcomed close to 400 of our Episcopal friends to the annual Diocesan Convention and everyone's ears should be ringing from the countless compliments received!
Convention 2020
