DECEMBER 2021

Hello New England and Bermuda Kiwanians

Happy December,

Well, the holiday season is upon us. I would like to thank everyone that came to the Fall Conference in North Conway, NH. I love seeing our members sharing ideas and supporting each other. Thank you to everyone that donated and bid on the “First Daughters Auction.” We raised $3,059 to be split between HAWC, Family and Children's Services (mental health awareness), the Kiwanis Foundation of New England, and the Kiwanis International Children's Fund!

We had several different hands-on service projects, which is so important to increase our impact and help others when we are together. I was overwhelmed with the generosity you all showed with the donations you brought for HAWC. Knowing that we made both no-sew fleece blankets to help the children and adults in the HAWC shelter and “Welcome Bags” for those entering shelters or displaced from their home due to domestic violence makes me beyond proud to be your Governor.

The New England and Bermuda District has had an impressive start to the 2021-2022 Kiwanis year. As we begin the third month of the Kiwanis year, it would be beneficial for your clubs and boards to review the club distinguished criteria for this year and create a plan to achieve this recognition. The distinguished criteria is on the district website (newenglandkiwanis.org) in the “recognition” section.

If you need any resources for your club officers or other member training opportunities, our district YouTube page will be a great resource for you. For this and more important links, check out this Linktree created by the education committee: https://linktr.ee/NEBDKiwanis.

As we move into the holidays, I would encourage everyone to take a time to look around and reflect on all that is dear to us. Please take time to step back from the hustle and bustle and enjoy the lights, holiday songs, and loved ones.

I wish you and your family a happy and magical holiday season.

With Love and Sparkle,

Governor Gayla

IN MEMORIAM - DOC SHERMAN

It is with greatest sadness that we report from the Kiwanis Club of Dover Foxcroft the passing of long time member and past Lieutenant Governor Harold “Doc” Sherman.

GARLAND - Harold "Doc" Sherman, beloved veterinarian for generations of animals and their owners, passed away peacefully at home on November 26, 2021, with his wife by his side. He was 91.

A farm boy from Aroostook County, Doc inherited a strong work ethic and sense of duty. He believed that his profession required total commitment, and he could always be counted on to tend to sick or injured animals at any hour of the day or night.

Doc was also an active, long-time member of the Kiwanis Club of Dover-Foxcroft. Many will recall, with a smile, his good-natured persistence when selling Kiwanis raffle tickets.

Doc is survived by his wife, Louise; son, Will Sherman; daughter, Elizabeth Perkins and her husband, David; grandson, Daniel Perkins and his wife, Cassandra; granddaughter, Anna Dolbeare and her husband, Justin; three great-grandchildren; frequent travel companion, Rita Page; and several pets, including his little dog, Jake; as well as a vast constellation of friends too numerous to count. We will all miss him so much.

We want to thank all those at Mayo Hospital, Eastern Maine Medical Center, and Beacon Hospice who provided such superb and respectful care, honoring his personal wishes and making this difficult process as smooth and comfortable as possible.

For those so inclined, we encourage you to donate to your local animal shelter, and we ask everyone to do a kind deed for an animal.

In light of pandemic concerns, no funeral service is planned.
