THE WESLEYAN AUGUST 2024

Letter From the Pastor

Dear John Wesley,

Can you believe it? August is here! I don’t know about you, but even though there are many things l love about the fall, I don’t think I am ready to let summer just pass me by just yet.  At the very least, there are still a few things we got going on at church that should be exciting. Maybe I will see you at one of them.

But let me not go so fast. If I can take you back to the 1st of July, I can tell you that taking my car to the shop to change the battery was like a metaphor predicting what the month would be like. Okay. Maybe it was more like the amount of energy we would need for it, but you know what I mean, right? Needless to say, we have been amazingly active in the summer.

On July 2, we started our Tasty Tuesdays, and a few of us showed up the first Tuesday at Eulinda’s, but since then our group has become larger (maybe in more ways than one 😄). We have been to Somerset, Ben and Bills, Dairy Queen and Smitty’s…and I’ve been to the gym several times too. I love ice cream but more than that, I love that we can talk, spend time and have fun together.

We also started up our Beach Services every Sunday morning at 7:30am. God has blessed through those services. We have not only seen people from John Wesley, we continue to see many visitors join us. We will continue our services all the way through the first Sunday in September. If you have not been to one of them, we would love to see you there. You will love it!

If you were not able to be at one of the Summer Plunge Events on Wednesdays evenings, you missed something very special. It was new. It was different, it was for people of all ages and it was super fun. Hats off to the team for their super creativity.

There is so much more that happened in July. The youth mission trip, which is happening even as I write. We had a wonderful and successful Rummage Sale. I wish I could show you pictures of the group of people who spent hours preparing for it, pictures of those who donated, and of all the volunteers that helped out before, during and after the event. Thank you all.

Worship Ministry ~ Betty Smith

Whether it is the sound of opportunity knocking or the whisper of the Spirit, you may be feeling called to serve in worship this summer (and into the fall!) Here are some suggestions:

  • If you have not already responded to Matt O’Connor about transporting, setting-up, and/or operating the audio equipment during the services at Surf Drive Beach, please contact him. It is not a difficult job!
  • Musicians are needed for beach, traditional, and contemporary services. Sign up sheets are in the fellowship hall.
  • Myles is still in need of volunteers in the media booth and in the chapel. It would be great if at least five more people would volunteer. Even one Sunday a month would make it easier for everyone involved.
  • Interested in serving as an usher? Let Mel Trott know. Preparing the altar for worship? Contact Lorretta Croft. Do you enjoy reading scripture? Tracy Jaekel would love to hear from you! If you need to be introduced to any of these folks, I’ll be glad to connect you.

Final reminders:

  • Worship at Surf Drive Beach starts July 7th at 7:30 AM and goes through September 1st.
  • No “Beach Worship” on August 18th (Falmouth Road Race).
  • NO worship services on Road Race Sunday as John Wesley provides parking and hospitality to the runners.
  • There WILL be one worship service on SATURDAY, AUGUST 17th at 4:00 PM.

Enjoy your summer, but don’t forget to join us in worship!

Shalom!

Betty Smith

Church Office ~ Lyndsey

Lyndsey will be working from home on Wednesdays, though the summer. She’ll be just as reachable and efficient as ever via email.

Children and Youth

The Children, Youth and Young Adult Ministry Team is looking for additional members. We have been tasked by the 2023 Strategic Planning Committee to create more opportunities for younger people in our loving community at John Wesley. We hope to recruit members who have an open heart for the younger people in our Upper Cape community and are ready to reach out to them.

The Team Meeting will be on Thursday August 22nd at 6 PM.

If you would like to talk to me or Bill Dorfner, Director of Children, Youth and Young Adults please email either or both of us here: Bill's email or my email.

Stewardship in Action ~ Tom Hoke

The Stewardship Ministry Team hopes that you are enjoying and finding value in the videos that we are creating! Much thanks for this to Tracy Jaekel for working with many other church leaders to gather information and develop the videos! On the third Sunday of each month, Pastor will feature a video in our Sunday services. Last Sunday he introduced our Music Ministry video. Please have a look by clicking the video below.

Hospitality and Events: Maryellen Geoghan and Christine Quesnel

During the months of July & August we will be doing “Coffee Hour Lite”

That means we will serve cold drinks- iced tea, lemonade, juice, and light snacks. Mixed fruit, watermelon, strawberry short cake, cookies. So many people are on vacation we thought we would lighten it up. If weather permits, we can serve outside or in the lobby or both for those of you who want to stay out of the sun. Outreach Ministry has assigned August.

Grateful,

Christine & Maryellen

Invitation and Connection ~ Lianne Carbone

Our new desk has arrived! Do you love it?

The purpose of the desk is both to welcome people, and to be the center of information for all of us. It will be a work in progress for a while, as we are gathering things together.  PLEASE use the Connect Cards and Suggestion cards that you find there.

Also, if you forget your name tag, we have temporary ones there.

Our team is also focusing on keeping the church calendar up-to-date and full of information.  You will find it on our website, currently under the "about us" tab.  Each event should have a location and a description, so that it is easy for all to engage. Let's use it!

See you at church!

Announcements

Thank you

To all my sisters and brothers in Christ.  THANK YOU for all your support, prayers, cards, phone calls, food, and visits during my recent surgery, and stay in Rehabilitation.  Thank you for your help when I finally came home. My surgery went well, but I had some other medical problems which resulted in a 3 week stay in Rehabilitation. That was a gift as I recovered much faster especially with all your prayers and well wishes. JW is a very supportive and loving church.

God Bless you all,

Donna Fish

On July 14th, we launched a new sermon series titled “Sharing a Thriving Church with the Next Generation.” Inspired by Jaco J. Hamman's book "The Millennial Narrative: Sharing a good life with the next generations," this series draws from the wisdom of the book of Joel to explore Millennials' experiences, aspirations and how we can bridge these gaps to foster deeper understanding and connection. It addresses critical issues such as loss, loneliness, spiritual growth, social justice, and our collective responsibility to create positive change in the world. Join us on July 14th as we embark on this meaningful journey together!

The Falmouth Walk is quickly approaching. This year the walk is on August 17th. JW is a major sponsor of this year’s walk. I encourage all who are interested to sign up soon in order to guarantee a shirt with the JW logo on the back of the shirt due to their sponsorship level. We want to see a “Sea of Red” on the walk route so the community witness JW out in the community supporting the Walk. If you have any questions reach out to Kate or Brent Finemore, Falmouth Committee Members.

GET READY FOR August 17 - Due to the Falmouth Road Race on Sunday August 18th, we will be having our worship service on Saturday August 17th at 4pm. This will be a combined worship service.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL and Fundraiser to support the Falmouth Service Center is being planned.

The interfaith clergy association is planning an ice cream social and fundraiser for Sunday August 25 at 6pm at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. All of our churches are invited to volunteer, contribute baked items and offer a gift basket with a value of $30-$50. You will hear more from Pastor René soon.

Summer is in full swing! Don't forget to plan for our beach services! We host worship services at Surf Drive Beach Sundays starting on July 7th until September 1st! (except for July 14th and August 18th)

The Falmouth Road Race is coming!

The Falmouth Road Race is coming!

As an outreach to the community, JWUMC changes our service to Saturday afternoon at 4 pm so we can offer free parking for the road race on Sunday morning. We also offer free bananas, watermelon, and water bottles. We do have information that we pass out about our church .

Donations are needed to support this outreach program!

Yes, we have no bananas, we have no bananas … YET!  (It would be best if you could bring them by the church on Friday, August 16th or Saturday, August 17th.)

Watermelons are another needed donation!  (It would be best if you could bring them by the church on Friday, August 16th or Saturday, August 17th.)

We also need donations for water bottles.  (You can buy water bottles in Mashpee, sandwich, or other towns on the Cape.) Water bottle donations will be stored in the last classroom on the right in the Sunday school wing. They can be dropped off at church now.

Here’s to another successful road race weekend outreach program!

Thank YOU!  Thank YOU!

The Trustees

Prayer Chain

The prayer chain is an email confidential prayer chain list. The prayer requests are sent out, and the team prayer warriors (19) are asked to pray for those requests. We generally keep them on the list for about a month unless they are requested to continue when we do an update request. If you are interested in joining in this service to the Lord in praying for others, contact Karen Camp at 508-737-1636 or at nerakpmac13@gmail.com.

Prayer Team

On the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month, there is a prayer team to pray for those who would like to have confidential prayers for themselves &/or others. On the 2nd Sunday we do the prayer requests during the last hymn, and on the 4th Sunday we do the praying off to the side after the benediction/benediction response. If you are interested in serving our Lord in joining as a prayer team member, contact Karen Camp at 508-737-1636 or nerakpmac13@gmail.com.

Wednesday Prayer Group

There is another prayer group opportunity at JWUMC. On Wednesdays at 11am, there is a prayer group to pray for those who would like to have prayers for themselves or others. They lift up our cross-cultural worker! If you are interested in joining as a prayer group member or have prayer requests, contact the pastor or the church office.

Another Prayer Request Option

There is also a box for prayer requests. There are cards available for you to fill out. They’re on the table underneath the television. There are also prayer business cards available for the taking.

Greeters

“Good Morning! Hello! Welcome! Thanks for coming to JWUMC!” Greeters are the first impression to our church.

If you are interested in being part of this important church representation through being welcoming, contact Karen Camp 508-7371636 or nerakpmac13@gmail.com.

Trustees

Trustees take care of the assets of the JWUM church. They are ”Taking Care of Assets”! Check out the bulletin board near the kitchen to see some of the recent accomplishments. Did you know that they go around and check all the doors after every Sunday service? Speaking of doors, it’s important to close the doors on the fellowship hall, sanctuary, Sunday school wing, etc. It’s a fire prevention method. So if you are leaving the church and notice doors that should be closed, please help out and close them. Thank you very much!

Members include: Chair Steve Adams, Tim Valade, Russ Brown, the pastor, Karen Camp, Pete Stasis, Phil Eastman, Mark Karsner, and Henry Brown.

Card Ministry

We like to celebrate the birthdays of members with a card!

If you know of someone from JWUMC who is ill or could use a “thinking of you” card, contact Karen Camp at 508-737-1636

or nerakpmac13@gmail.com.

Library

Take advantage of the great opportunity available to you! The library is located in the Lyman Lounge just down the hallway outside the sanctuary. There are great literary treasures there for you to take one or leave one!

Outreach/Missions ~ Bonnie Valade

Changing Our World for the month of August is for "Fishing for a Mission 22", a nonprofit organization that harnesses the therapeutic potential of fishing to aid veterans still grappling with the hidden scars of war.

The Service Center is in need for Apple Juice - Cheerios and Ensure or Boost. There is a shortage of these items and are most needed at this time.

Our next meeting is August 21st 6 pm in the Fitzgerald room. Please join us if you have a passion to help our neighbors in need. Email me at bvaladecc@comcast.net if you would like to attend.

Deuteronomy 15:11 " For the poor will never cease to be in the land: therefore I command you, saying, you shall open your hand wide unto your brother, to the poor, and to the needy".

Bonnie Valade

The Church Mouse

If you’re looking for me, I would search the chapel, office, and the Fitzgerald room where there is air conditioning. I am so delighted to hang out in the garden in front of the church as there is always something blooming! The church really has gorgeous grounds so many thanks to all the people involved in keeping them looking neat and beautiful!

I am so enjoying all the volunteers who are singing or playing special music in the summer to help enhance our worship! Thanks! Many thanks to those people who prepare & serve the monthly communion elements as it is such a moving part of worship!

The missions committee group is supporting many different organizations. Check out the donations service center box in the fellowship hall. Also, look at the bulletin board for other ways that you can help them complete missions for the world in the name of our Lord!

You also may find me on Sunday mornings hanging out under the media booth. They work hard! Last week I had to watch the streaming as I think I ate some dodgy cheese. I am learning so much about the importance of wires so I don’t chew on them anymore!

You can find out what’s going on with the church between the service, the website, or the bulletin boards lining the fellowship hall. I know I like to know what’s going on. You never know when there might be an event where a crumb or two is dropped.

Here’s a shout out to the finance committee & treasurer for counting the offering, bills, pledge statements, investment management, and more! They are rocking it, according to the scuttle-but. I don’t use money in my world, but I know it’s important in yours! I’m sure it’s a huge job!

Thank you to Lyndsey for putting together a wonderful newsletter each month. Thanks to all of you that contribute. Once I read it, it makes a wonderful nest for me.

Best summer wishes,

The JWUMC mouse

Sharing Love

We must share our love with others,

For, by God we are truly blessed;

To help people less fortunate,

Assuring that we do our best.

We should always feel so grateful

Giving love and care to others;

Everyone is loved by the Lord…

All of our sisters and brothers.

We have the freedom and power

To share with others our good work,

Knowing that the Lord is grateful

If our duties we do not shirk.

Let us always give thanks to God

With heartfelt love, praise and prayer,

Assured that He is listening,

Being so grateful He is there.
