THE WESLEYAN

JULY 2024

Letter From the Pastor

Dear John Wesley family and friends,

One of the things I have come to love and expect every week after every Sunday is Joy’s poems, where she reflects on each sermon. In May of this year, she wrote a beautiful poem which was not connected with a sermon, but two lines of it caught my eyes:

In spring everything awakens

Revealing some of God’s treasures.

Just so you know, I have not always loved Spring. For most of my life Spring has meant dealing with bad allergies which cannot be controlled with over-the-counter medicine. Over the last couple of years, however, I have come to treasure the awakening of new life that happens after the long winter season. Don’t get me wrong, there are some aspects of winter that I love, fresh snow included, but the sprouting and reawakening of new life that emerges out of the hiddenness of the ground, has come to mean a lot more.

That is how I have experienced this season at John Wesley. I see new life emerging everywhere. I see us coming out of the hiddenness and cold of winter with new hopes. I see our life together sprouting into the newness of a new day of mission and ministry. I see new faces and I rejoice at God’s handiwork and treasures. Although we have faced some challenges and difficult situations, and things have not always happened the way we thought or expected, there are also new things sprouting up at John Wesley that we should take time to celebrate joyfully.

As your pastor, I have witnessed everyone’s generous hearts and spirits, which makes this community of faith a unique place. This is a place of love and friendships. This is a place where we know God leads. I do not know about other houses of worship or churches, but this is a place where imperfect people are saved by God’s grace.

I leave you with two words, one of gratitude and one of remembrance. You all know that a lot of ministry happens behind the scenes, so hats off to all the JW leaders, volunteers and teams who make it all possible. I also thank God for the life and faithfulness of Deb Werner. A beloved member who fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith. “Now,” as the apostle Paul testified of his own life, “there is in store for her the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to her…” 2 Tim. 4:7-8

Blessings,

Pastor René

Church Office ~ Lyndsey

Hey everyone!

Just a quick heads-up: the church office will be closed on July 4th and 5th, 2024, to celebrate Independence Day. If you need anything urgently, hit us up before or after those dates, and we'll get back to you ASAP.

Wishing you all a fantastic 4th of July! Stay safe, have fun, enjoy some BBQs, fireworks, and time with loved ones. See you soon!

Cheers,

Lyndsey

Worship Ministry ~ Betty Smith

Do you hear that? Is it a knocking sound? Or maybe it is a whisper? Whether it is the sound of opportunity knocking or the whisper of the Spirit, you may be feeling called to serve in worship this summer (and into the fall!) Here are some suggestions:

  • If you have not already responded to Matt O’Connor about transporting, setting-up, and/or operating the audio equipment during the services at Surf Drive Beach, please contact him. It is not a difficult job!
  • Musicians are needed for beach, traditional, and contemporary services. Sign up sheets are in the fellowship hall.
  • Myles is still in need of volunteers in the media booth and in the chapel. It would be great if at least five more people would volunteer. Even one Sunday a month would make it easier for everyone involved.
  • Interested in serving as an usher? Let Mel Trott know. Preparing the altar for worship? Contact Lorretta Croft. Do you enjoy reading scripture? Tracy Jaekel would love to hear from you! If you need to be introduced to any of these folks, I’ll be glad to connect you.

As Pastor René said in a recent sermon, “Large churches have a large number of people that do a few things. Smaller churches have a few people that do a LOT of things!” The evidence that our church family does a LOT of things was shown on Celebration Sunday when the majority of folks attending the service was standing by the end of the Recognition of Volunteers. Thank you for all you do and for considering “one more thing.”

Final reminders:

  • Worship at Surf Drive Beach starts July 7th at 7:30 AM and goes through September 1st.
  • No “Beach Worship” on July 14th (Falmouth Triathlon) or August 18th (Falmouth Road Race).
  • NO worship services on Road Race Sunday as John Wesley provides parking and hospitality to the runners.
  • There WILL be one worship service on SATURDAY, AUGUST 17th at 4:00 PM.

Enjoy your summer, but don’t forget to join us in worship!

Shalom!

Betty Smith

Summer Mission Trip 2024

We are getting even closer to our summer mission trip to Harrisburg, PA and the group is coming together. We still have openings for some more teens!

You will be involved in community development efforts to improve the life of Harrisburg’s residents. You will have the opportunity to serve with a local children’s program, community gardens and food banks, and assist neighborhood associations with small home repair, community beautification and cleanup projects. In the evenings, you’ll visit Hershey’s Chocolate World for a chocolate tour and enjoy the beauty of Harrisburg alongside friends you make during the week. YouthWorks has partnered with this community since 2010.

If you would like to participate, please call Bill or email him at youth.jwumc@gmail.com

Donations for our mission trip are gladly accepted!

We are busy working on fundraising in order to cover the cost of any student who would like to go on our mission trip. If you are able to help with a donation, please email Bill, or you can give through the office by putting “Youth Mission Trip” on the memo line of your check.

Sunday Student Ministry Events

We will be meeting Sundays, July 7, 14, and 21 from 5:30-7pm in the youth center. This is open to all students going into the 7th-12th grades. Bring your friends and enjoy games, meaningful discussions, and more!

Stewardship in Action ~ Tom Hoke

The Stewardship Ministry Team hopes that you are enjoying and finding value in the videos that we are creating! Much thanks for this to Tracy Jaekel for working with many other church leaders to gather information and develop the videos! On the third Sunday of each month, Pastor will feature a video in our Sunday services. Last Sunday he introduced our Music Ministry video. Please have a look by clicking the video below.

Hospitality and Events: Maryellen Geoghan and Christine Quesnel

During the months of July & August we will be doing “Coffee Hour Lite”

That means we will serve cold drinks- iced tea, lemonade, juice, and light snacks. Mixed fruit, watermelon, strawberry short cake, cookies. So many people are on vacation we thought we would lighten it up. If weather permits, we can serve outside or in the lobby or both for those of you who want to stay out of the sun. Youth & Hospitality are assigned to July and Outreach Ministry has August.

Looking forward to Summer!!!

Grateful,

Christine & Maryellen

Welcome and Invitation ~ Lianne Carbone

Welcome and Invitation Team

New Connection Cards:  You will find this new card in the pews and in the lobby.  Instead of us having a "Welcome" card to fill out, it's called a Connection Card and has different questions on the back. This means that any one who is new AND someone who has been coming for a while but would like to be more connected can fill out the card and drop it in the Welcome box in the lobby.  Getting to know each other!

Also, our team will be there for the SUMMER PLUNGE on the last 4 Wednesdays of July.  We'll register you, greet you, and make sure you know where to go when you arrive.  We think this is the start of a whole new way for ALL of us to engage and connect, and make new or regulars feel welcomed.

See you there!

Lianne Cabone and the Team

Men's Breakfast ~ Matt O'Connor

Men's Breakfast:

We’ve decided to take a hiatus over the summer for Men’s Breakfast. We hope to resume in September. If you have any questions or suggestions for future MB events, please contact Matt O’Connor.

Summertime is here! Don't forget to plan for our beach services! We host worship services at Surf Drive Beach Sundays starting on July 7th until August 25th! (except for July 14th and August 18th)

Prayer Chain

The prayer chain is an email confidential prayer chain list. The prayer requests are sent out, and the team prayer warriors are asked to pray for those requests. We generally keep them on the list for about a month unless they are requested to continue. If you are interested in joining in praying for others, contact Karen Camp at 508-737-1636 or nerakpmac13@gmail.com.

Prayer Team

On the second (during the last hymn) and fourth (after the service) Sundays of the month, there is a prayer team to pray for those who would like to have confidential prayers for themselves or others. [Generally, the prayer teams do not operate in the summer.] If you are interested in joining as a prayer team member, contact Karen Camp at 508-737-1636 or

nerakpmac13@gmail.com.

Wednesday Prayer Group

On Wednesdays at 11am, there is a prayer group to pray for those who would like to have prayers for themselves or others. If you are interested in joining as a prayer group member or have prayer requests, contact the pastor or the church office.

Greeters

Hello! Welcome! Good Morning! Thanks for coming to JWUMC! Greeters are the first impression from our church. Currently, a greeter is scheduled for once a month to open doors, say a greeting, shake hands, and/or give directions starting at 9 am.

If you are interested in being part of the welcome, contact Karen Camp 508-737- 1636 or nerakpmac13@gmail.com.

Card Ministry

We celebrate birthdays with cards as a family of God. We share in the grief of those who have lost a loved one. Also, if you know of someone who’s ill or could use a “thinking of you” card, contact Karen Camp at 508-737-1636 (call or text) or nerakpmac13@gmail.com.

Trust in the Trustees

Here are a few things that you might’ve seen being taken care of around the John Wesley United Methodist Church building and property.

There is a set routine to keep the filters changed in the water filter in the narthex … cool, refreshing, and tasty water.

Many thanks to the trustees and all those who helped in setting up & putting away the tents, tables, and chairs for the celebration Sunday luncheon.

The septic tanks have been pumped.

Plans are underway for the preparation of the facilities for the Falmouth Road Race Sunday.

Work is being done to address the water leak at the nozzle near the community gardens.

The back door in the fellowship hall has been fixed to fit better.

Are you interested in helping keep the chapel plants watered and pruned? The level of water in the pond also needs to be checked. If this interests you, let Steve Adams know.

The playground will soon be getting prepped for improvements.

This is just a small sample of some of the recent jobs the trustees have undertaken to keep the building in good shape to help facilitate our works for God and the worshipful celebration of our Lord.

AGAPE Team

A new Agape Team is being formed to help keep us connected to one another. The Team will visit those who may be house bound, in the hospital or in a facility.

A card ministry is being handled by Karen Camp; you can contact Karen if you know of someone who could use a welcoming card.

We also would like to have church members get matched up with someone; they would call one another to check in. It could be done on a daily basis; every couple of days or once a week. The members would decide what they would prefer. Please look in the directory and see if there is anyone that might not be able to attend Sunday Services that you could reach out to and give them a call. See Sharon Mulcahy and let her know if you want her to match you with someone. This was done many years back and was very successful. It is a wonderful way for us to stay in contact with one another.

Please call the church office and let Lyndsey know if someone is in need of prayer, in the hospital or a facility. She will notify the Pastor and he will pass it on to members of the Team.

If anyone would like to join us, please contact the following members:

Sharon Mulcahy, Carolyn Reynolds, Karen Camp, Karen Dean or Linda Duane.

The Church Mouse

Happy summer!

Beach Services start July 7th (except for the August Falmouth Road race weekend) at 7:30 am!  I have my beach chair ready!

It’s certainly a good thing that our church has so many people who have medical training. I found them scrambling faster than I can skedaddle to get medical equipment to fix our pastor’s injuries. Thanks, everybody!

Did you notice we had two boys lighting the candles with their grandmother for the 6/2 service?  We might have some new acolytes – yay!

At night I use those prayer candles in the back of the sanctuary on the prayer table, a nice touch for prayer & my devotional reading from books I got from the library in the Lyman Lounge (side hall by the sanctuary).

I found a nickel outside so I put in the offering plate to help with missions for the World Central Kitchen. I wonder what we will be collecting change for “Changing the World” this summer? How about cheese for everyone!

If you lost things, check in the office in the lost and found box that’s quite full (great for me to take a little nap amongst everything.) I went camping the other day because someone left some clothing in the coat room so I climbed in and slept like I was in a hammock up in a tree. Check out the coatroom for clothing you might’ve left behind.

I look forward to learning from book & Bible studies like the Tuesday morning one, the Thursday afternoon one, and the Monday night one that may start up in the fall. On most Tuesday nights I get a free wonderful concert with the Falmouth Chorale.

Sunday school is over until the fall so I will miss seeing the kids down in the Sunday school wing laughing and learning!

The pastor was doing his studying and reading when I was taking a nap under his desk. He said I snore squeakily.

Have you noticed that tree stump in the back that keeps growing the branches? I try to help the Trustees by chewing on them to sharpen my teeth.

Say cheese and have a great summer!

The Beauty of Nature

There is much beauty to behold

Living here beside the seashore;

Mother Nature’s in her glory,

Who could ask for anything more?

Birds are busy building their nests;

Wild phlox abounds here by Great Bay;

My tree peonies in full bloom

Make a glorious sight each day!

Rain and sunshine help plants to grow,

Nourishing everything on earth;

Thank You, God, for Nature’s beauty,

A priceless treasure it is worth!
