...the first requirement for a healer is a genuine feeling of compassion and a desire to help the person who is sick or in pain, for without this it would be very difficult to engender a feeling of empathy with the patient...for in the practice of healing the rapport between healer and patient is a significant factor.
...healing is an art which is not undertaken casually. It requires a moment or two of self preparation which is based upon what we call centering, that is, a conscious effort to free oneself from one's anxieties and inner disturbances, and to be at peace within oneself.
...
Through centering, we become aware of our own disturbed emotions and consciously disassociate ourselves from them by focusing all our energies in the heart center, which is the seat of compassion and of wholeness. This fosters two qualities which are important in the healing process: rootedness and detachment.
Centering not only makes us feel at peace; it also connects us with the inner order within ourselves. This I call rootedness. By concentrating on being peaceful within, we align ourselves with the fundamental order and compassion which are expressions of the spiritual component of the world. Healing is the reestablishment of order within the body's systems. I perceive its accomplishment as due to a universal energy which springs from the tendency towards order that is at the heart of all living processes. ...
When we are trying to help someone..., it is always important to realize that the results are not in our hands. Healing involves forces and agencies which we do not fully understand, and certainly cannot command. Rather, we seek to be instruments of the power of healing which exists everywhere in nature. ...Therefore, the healer must scrupulously avoid any trace of vested interest in the outcome of his or her efforts in behalf of another. The end cannot be predicted, and success is not the goal. ...
