"What's past is prologue," the Bard tells us, but prologue to what? In two weeks' time, we expect the United Kingdom will have a new prime minister. By that time too the outcome of the EU's parliamentary elections will be known. Both developments, we suspect, will have some bearing on Brexit and the UK's future relationship with the European Union. At GBD, we hope to give Brexit the renewed attention it deserves, both with GBD events and in these pages. Those projects are likely to include an unsentimental look at what has transpired.
Today, however, we shall supplement the above only with this brief comment from
Jacob Rees-Mogg, a Conservative MP who has been a severe critic of Theresa May's handling of Brexit. In an interview following the Prime Minister's Downing Street speech this morning,
Mr. Rees-Mogg said:
I think on the day somebody goes it's a day to be generous and to pay tributes and to recognize Mrs. May's virtues. ... She is incredibly dutiful. She is patriotic, and she has wanted to do her best in very, very difficult circumstances.
