Thrilling that Stacey Abrams is officially running! Democrats owe their Senate majority to Stacey’s Georgia Miracle – made possible by registering and electrifying so many new Democrats. Now her inspired leadership and field know-how could make her the first Black governor of Georgia, and the first female Black governor of any state – could help re-elect Sen. Raphael Warnock – and could drive turnout nationwide in the ‘22 midterms. Thank you Stacey!

Republicans are trying to destroy Democratic institutions to create a Cult of the Leader, top-down, authoritarian form of government. The solution is not to follow them down that road, but to do the work to strengthen the institutions they want broken.
This is where you come in.
Basically, the way to save democracy… is with more democracy. Or what Barack Obama calls citizenship.
We need more votes, more representatives, more people running for office, more people knocking on doors and registering voters.
The bottom line is, we have to convince more people to defeat this kind of politics by using the democratic system and not by abandoning it. Voting works. Organizing works.
They want us to believe it’s hopeless, so we let our guard down and they waltz in and take it all. But if we let them take it all, it really will be hopeless.
Don’t forget the people who made real change over the years, who pushed for fairness and equality and changing the status quo.… they didn’t have the luxury of... just throwing up their hands and abdicating responsibility to a broken system.
They had to believe change was possible or they wouldn’t have been able to fight.
And that is how we’ve accomplished every major piece of progress in this nation’s history. It’s how we desegregated schools and got women the vote and made gay marriage a reality. It’s how we got social security and workers’ rights and passed the ACA. It is how we will end up embracing the trans community and building a democracy that works for all of us and saving our planet for humanity.
Not from being cynical and shutting down.
But from being passionate and standing up.

Super volunteer Jeff Sielaf has been cutting these awesome training videos as part of each battleground state's Voter Drive in a Box. They're fun, they're quick, and they teach you exactly how to register Democrats using either a paper form or Voterizer.org on a smartphone or tablet.

STRAT BRIEFING: OUR 3-PHASE PLAN FOR THE MAKE-OR-BREAK '22 MIDTERMS
In case you missed it, we had our One Year Out Strat Briefing with Field Team 6 founder Jason Berlin and our very special guest Felicia Moore, the frontrunner in the Atlanta mayoral runoff election. The crucial 2022 midterms are now less than a year away, and our strategy is clear: save the Senate, save the House, and win down-ballot along the way. But how will we do this? NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY OF ACTION!
Recently we told you about the National Voter Registration Roundtable, a new group co-founded by our own Director of Operations Wayne Liebman and fellow Super-Organizers Emi Guereca and Will Baum!
The Roundtable brings together national on-the-ground voter registration orgs to share ideas, strategies, and best practices. It includes organizations like Field Team 6, Women’s March Action, Activate America, Center for Common Ground, Sister District, They See Blue, Register Her, Southwest Voter Project, The Civics Center, and many others to eliminate duplicate effort, boost firepower, stretch dollars, fire up volunteers, and win elections.
One of its first projects: turning Voter Registration Day from a yearly into a monthly event.
For the first of these, the roundtable has designated January 6, 2022 the first National Voter Registration Day of Action. Groups all over the country will be synchronizing registration events to mark the anniversary of the insurrection by empowering democracy the grassroots way—registering new voters, and getting them fired up as heck.
CALL TO ACTION! So all you FT6 volunteers who'd like to hold a registration drive in-person or virtually that day (a postcard writing party, a phone bank, a text bank, etc), let's get those plans rolling and start filling the calendar! VOLUNTEER SHOUT-OUT: JUDY SHATKIN |
|
This week we’re shouting out Judy Shatkin, a multi-hyphenate volunteer extraordinaire: pianist-composer-retired pediatrician-breast cancer survivor-ice hockey enthusiast-and-former-nightclub-owner. And she’s just getting started.
How did she get involved with political activism? “2020 certainly switched on the light of need: the prospect of a Trump re-election and the threat of totalitarianism had me thoroughly frightened. Suppressing the truth? Using disinformation and destroying trust in news? Disenfranchising voters? Plus, dismantling hundreds of environmental protections in one fell swoop? Undermining women's and civil rights...and so much more!”
So Judy decided to get to work with some textbanking. “I loved texting because it drew on my skills in dealing with people that I honed running the restaurant/night club working with unhappy or inebriated guests. The customer is always right!”
She took a breather after helping to defeat Trump, but the off-year election got those alarm bells ringing again. So now she’s back in the saddle, focusing on the issues that motivate her most. “I find the power of corporations and monied interests over citizens to be unjust and wholly unacceptable. It puts the health of our people and planet literally at mortal risk.”
She’s also passionate about the role of diet in health, after gaining Covid 19 pounds during the pandemic. And even though she's a physician, she had little understanding of the immense health benefits of a whole-foods plant-based diet. “Information that has been sadly suppressed and under-promoted due to politics and money.”
Judy recently led her first Field Team 6 voter registration drive. It was a balmy 43°F in Wisconsin in November, so “we did not get scads of registrations, but we did learn a lot, and we were able to generate ideas of how to move forward with our next efforts.”
She’s also combining her many different skills and passions into an original form of activism. As a pianist/composer (check out her "Judy Night" YouTube channel HERE), she’s been working with visual artists from around the world on a unique project called “Craters" that addresses depression during the pandemic. The music and art should be released in 2022, so stay tuned.
Her dream for the future of our country is clear. “Remove the corporate stranglehold over the courts and legislature, power to the people!"
Judy, thank you for your hard work to improve our health and the health of our body politic. We're lucky to have you on our team, and salute your dedication, spirit and unique talents!
