Happy Juneteenth!

On Juneteenth, we celebrate the moment on June 19th, 1865, when a Union general arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform everyone that the Civil War was over and that all enslaved people were free. Though African Americans have celebrated Juneteenth since then, activist Opal Lee spearheaded the effort to get it recognized as a federal holiday. Last year, Congress finally passed a bill doing just that – despite some Republicans voting against it – and President Biden signed it into law. This year, the holiday will be observed all through this weekend, and officially observed as well on Monday, June 20th.

The best way to celebrate Juneteenth is by registering people to vote! The promise of this democracy will not be fulfilled until everyone's voice is heard. So wherever you are in the country, find a Juneteenth celebration near you – and print out some Magic Voter Registration Cards to hand out to everyone you can! Or for extra credit, check out Voter Drive in a Box for your state, gather your trusty clipboards, pens and forms, and register people yourself! (Alert: Texas has special rules about this, so please read up on those first.)
 
Your voice is the most powerful tool you have for making change. Use your voice to lift up someone else’s! As President Obama taught us, “One voice can change a room, and if one voice can change a room, then it can change a city, and if it can change a city, it can change a state, and if it change a state, it can change a nation, and if it can change a nation, it can change the world. Your voice can change the world.”

Field Team 6 is currently accepting applications for our Summer Internship program. It's open to high schoolers (sophomores and older) and college students who can work 10-20 hours per week between June and September.

This unpaid/volunteer position looks amazing on the resume and provides valuable training in a range of skills (leadership, organizing, writing, advertising, marketing, data analysis, and more). Plus, it empowers students to establish a high school or college Democratic club, or even launch their own political career. And we'll provide a great Letter of Recommendation.

SLACK WATCH PARTY... JAN 6TH SELECT COMMITTEE HEARING ZOOM RE-STREAM
The January 6th Select Committee has hit two home runs and shows no sign of slowing down. The DOJ and state Attorneys General are paying close attention. And a certain Disgraced Former President and his cabal of shady advisors are in full freakout mode.

But it's still a tough watch, seeing how close we came to losing everything – and knowing the same forces are still plotting against a free and democratic America.

That's why we're once again jumping on Slack to watch together. We can not only joke, cry, and talk each other through it... We can also share good ideas for social media posts that help amplify the truth... and post all the ways for people to register Democrats! That's exactly how we block this slow-moving coup and protect our democracy!

FRIDAY, JULY 1: RELAX IN THE AIR-CONDITIONED ARCADE!
The problem? Field Team 6 has contact information for millions of eligible, likely Democrats – FAR more than we can afford to text. Yet texting is an incredibly effective outreach tool. And there is always huge volunteer demand for texting. So the only obstacle is funding.

The solution? Text Arcades.

A Text Arcade is a super-fast text bank that costs $25 a ticket. And here's why that's a game-changer... 100% of your ticket price goes to funding this textbank. In fact, we're subsidizing the costs of texting to keep the ticket price reasonable, so shout-outs (shouts-out?) to our other donors who are helping defray costs as well! Wade promised – allowing women and their doctors to make health decisions without government interference – are being taken away by right wing justices on the Trump-packed Supreme Court.

So it's time to register more Democrats, just in time to elect more pro-choice senators who can codify Roe into federal law, post '22 midterms!

VOLUNTEER SHOUTOUT: JESSICA NEMIRE
This week we’re waving the FT6 Flag of Appreciation in honor of an awesome volunteer, Jessica Nemire, who has a long history of activism, going all the way back to kindergarten!

Yep, Jessica was carefully co-writing letters with her parents to their U.S. Senators before 1st grade, and when she was eight, she started an environmental club to raise money for the Nature Conservancy. It was terrifying, but she took on the task of calling up all the parents on the roster to put a bake sale together every summer for the four years that followed.

Jessica eventually got a BA in Journalism, and became a freelance writer. She’s also a copywriter for a dating app.

For Field Team 6, she puts her lifelong experience in political activism to good use. Jessica started out by managing our YouTube channel. She's flown to Arizona with her stepdad to register college students to vote (right before the world shut down). And now she does a lot of phone and text banking (and is slightly better on the phone than when she was eight). She’s a huge fan of our BYOP Text Banking!

Jessica is frequently found in public in a cow onesie or banana suit... because life is too short not to have fun. She is also frequently found at protests waving signs around and chanting.

Jessica, we're honored that you're one of our top bananas. We appreciate your passion, spirit and energy, as you continue to help us push for a better world.
