a non-profit organization founded by Catherine Murphy in 2005, is a documentary oral history project that collects personal testimonies about literacy. "Our work lifts up the stories of those who are teaching literacy or are struggling to achieve literacy," says Murphy. The Literacy Project operates on the belief that literacy is a fundamental social justice and human rights issue, essential for a healthy and dignified society and a fully functioning democracy. Of special concern is the intersection of race and gender as it relates to literacy. Through a variety of media and documentation methodologies, an archive is being created of personal stories related to literacy and social justice movements throughout the Americas.

The Literacy Project films include: Silvio Rodriguez: Mi primera tarea (2020);They Say I'm Your Teacher (2019); Maestra (2012) ;Cruzada (in production);Teach (in production);Lxs Hijxs de Paulo Freire (indevelopment). Visit their YouTube Page  for a collection of their  archived films . The English language version of Maestra is distributed by Women Make Movies, link here.

This event and the companion links are part of a collective effort to enrich this special occasion while stimulating the practice of popular education

Throughout the world we see the effects
of the deliberate manipulation of ignorance and the stoking of the flames of hate
we see the absence in whole parts of this country
of centers for culture and creativity
we see eroded common resources and cynical contributions to the kinds of manufactured illiteracy that breeds only degenerate forms of popular expression
while the infrastructures that stimulate robust human development are increasingly only found only accessible to fewer and fewer people
while the degradation of humans and the planet has accelerated at a truly frightening pace
we have long stood against these decrepit sins and are committed to work against these trends as we continue to build community through our powerful voices
and together we shine our bright lights and go forward out of darkness

Thank you to Estelle Schneider, Angelica Salazar, Kimberly Waller, Micaela Marquez, Johan Misler and Catherine Murphy for collectively working on developing the popular educational tools for this event

While nueva cancion/nueva trova is primarily a movement that emerged in Latin America, protest songs in the US infused the multiplicity of African- American traditions - from ring shouts to spirituals - griot traditions in performance poetry layered with experimental soul, funk and jazz. Classics like 'A Change is Gonna Come" "What's Going On?" and "Wake Up Everybody" are now ubiquitous soundtracks that stand in for that time.
