Announcements

new_years_fireworks.jpg

As we enter our last full year of recruitment we want to wish you all a very Happy New Year and thank you sincerely for making THRIVE possible. There are over 200 people directly involved with THRIVE across more than 20 institutions. The sum of all the individual tasks you take care of on a daily basis translate into what is, thus far, an incredibly successful trial. We are exceptionally grateful for your hard work and dedication to making THRIVE a success. Thank you!

New Sites Are Making Progress!

Our four new sites are making great progress! As the THRIVE teams know, it takes a lot of time and effort to get a study up and running and we are grateful for their dedication.

Continuing Review

The annual Continuing Review (CR) is upon us. As has been our process in the past, Laura will send each site a CR document that includes all the needed enrollment, S/AE, withdrawal, etc. numbers. In order to have all numbers match across all 24 sites, the numbers provided are the ones to be used in the application. You should see a notification come through by Monday, January 26th. Please have the CR form completed and submitted in the WUSTL sIRB system by Friday, January 30th.

Full Scale Protocol Published

In September 2025, the full scale protocol was published in BMJ Open. The PDF is also available on Dropbox.

Duo to Okta Transition

UM is replacing Duo with an industry-leading platform for managing digital identities and access called Okta. For THRIVE, we use Duo to complete two-factor authentication when logging into MQUARK and the Linking app.

Starting January 14, 2026, university‑wide communications will begin, and all UMICH account holders will be invited to enroll in Okta to prepare for the new sign‑in experience.

On February 25, 2026, everyone will begin using Okta to sign in. You can learn more about the upcoming changes at its.umich.edu/okta-transition.

This transition will enhance the sign‑in experience and improve security for the U-M community. New capabilities, including password-less sign‑in options such as Face ID, Touch ID, and Windows Hello, will enhance the user experience while protecting university accounts from ever-evolving cybersecurity threats.

For now, please keep Duo installed on your phone. The website linked above has a lot of helpful information and is worth scrolling through. I will provide more information as it becomes available.

Getting to Know the Team - Henry Ford Health System

Anoop Chhina, MD

Henry Ford Health System

Dr Anoop Chhina is a staff anesthesiologist and intensivist at Henry Ford Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Michigan State University and Wayne State University. She serves as the Program Director of the Anesthesiology Residency at Henry Ford Hopsital, with a longstanding commitment to resident and fellow mentorship, curriculum development, and quality improvement. Dr. Chhina became interested in the THRIVE study through her clinical and educational focus on perioperative cognitive outcomes, recognizing delirium as a major yet under-identified contributor to postoperative morbidity. She joined THRIVE to better understand standardized delirium assessment and to help advance evidence-based, team-driven approaches to improving patient-centered outcomes. Her participation has also provided valuable insight into large, multi-site collaborative research and reinforced the importance of communication and teamwork in translating research into practice. She remains deeply committed to using research and quality initiatives to strengthen education and prepare trainees for thoughtful, patient-centered care. Outside work, she enjoys gardening, travelling and spending time with her husband and three children.

Sonalee Shah, DO

Henry Ford Health System

Dr. Shah is currently the Division Head of General Anesthesiology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Her recent research interests include exploring the use of virtual reality in medical training and identifying, implementing, and evaluating changes in anesthesia practice to improve environmental sustainability. She is deeply passionate about advancing high-quality clinical patient care, which is why she is thrilled to be part of the THRIVE team, as this study helps address long-standing questions surrounding many of our everyday anesthetic practices. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and 2 children.

Carlos E. Guerra-Londono, MD

Henry Ford Health System

Dr. Carlos E. Guerra-Londono is a Colombian physician and the Medical Co-Director of the Anesthesia Research Division within the Department of Anesthesiology at Henry Ford Health. Dr. Guerra-Londono earned his medical degree from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia before completing an anesthesiology residency at Henry Ford Health in Detroit and a specialized fellowship in cancer anesthesiology at MD Anderson Cancer Center. His clinical practice focuses on complex oncologic procedures and regional anesthesia. He also supports the department's efforts to increase its academic footprint via original research, multicenter collaboration, and industry-sponsored partnerships.

Allison Pekar

Henry Ford Health System

Allison Pekar has been working in Anesthesia Research at Henry Ford Health for a little over 3 years now. She graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2021 with a degree in Clinical Exercise Science. The things she has enjoyed the most about working on THRIVE is the team and interacting with patients. The THRIVE team has been very pleasant and supportive, which makes THRIVE that much more enjoyable to be a part of. Getting to know patients as they go through the study is also wonderful. A fun fact about Allison is that she has a little 4-pound Maltese Yorkie named Ralphie. Glad to be a part of the team!
