Study Procedure Reminders

A number of new staff have joined our teams across the country so we are sharing refreshers on important study procedures.

THRIVE does not allow consenting on the day of surgery

Complete survey attempt forms at the same time as the attempt

Review rescheduled surgeries (surgery date 2111-11-11) and withdraw as appropriate

Update Surgical Complexity on the POD1 tab if it changes. Not updating impacts site metrics.

Talk to the attending anesthesiologist before randomizing the patient

Confirm whether patients are in-house or outpatient on DOS

Have a plan for follow-up before 9am for any patients who are in-house on POD1

It is always ok to withdraw a patient before randomization if the clinical team is uncomfortable about adhering to the randomization result.

Personnel Change Form

New team members joining? Current team members departing? Please make sure to complete the Personnel Change Form so new hires get the training information they need, and systems access for people no longer on the team can be removed.

Getting to Know the Team - Massachusetts General Hospital

Amit Bardia, MD

Massachusetts General Hospital

Dr. Amit Bardia is a cardiac anesthesiologist in the Department of Anesthesiology at Massachusetts

General Hospital. Through the THRIVE study, he enjoys working with a collaborative team and learning

more about factors that may influence recovery after surgery. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time

with family and is an avid cricket fan.

Aditi Melkote

Massachusetts General Hospital

Aditi joined the MGH Department of Anesthesiology as a research coordinator after gaining experience

in microbiology research and some preliminary exposure to clinical research. With the THRIVE study, she

enjoys learning about how the two different anesthetic modalities can impact patients’ cognition and

recovery, especially across the large range of surgical procedures that consented patients undergo.

Outside of work, Aditi enjoys reading and visiting new coffee shops.

Norah Grimes

Massachusetts General Hospital

Norah joined the MGH team as a Clinical Research Coordinator in June 2026. She brings both clinical and research experience, including work in dermatology, anesthesiology, and Alzheimer's disease research. Norah holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Tufts University School of Medicine and is excited to support participant recruitment, assessments, and study coordination for the THRIVE study.

Julia Smotkin

Massachusetts General Hospital

Julia joined MGH’s Anesthesia Research Center after gaining experience in oncology clinical research.

What Julia enjoys most about THRIVE is finding small moments of human connection with patients as

they navigate through illness, surgery, and recovery.

Scotti Harrison

Massachusetts General Hospital

Scotti joined the ARC Center with experience supporting clinical research involving anesthesia, surgery,

and ICU care in both adult and pediatric settings. Through her work on the THRIVE Study, she has

developed an interest in understanding how anesthesia and perioperative care affect recovery after

surgery. She is especially interested in research that helps improve patient outcomes, optimize recovery,

and better understand the patient experience throughout the surgical process. At the ARC Center, Scoti

is excited to contribute to work that supports patient-centered perioperative care.
