Drawing on years of experience working with architecturally significant properties, Emmert will share best practices for preserving the character-defining features that make these homes unique while thoughtfully adapting them for contemporary living.

Topics will include identifying original design elements worth preserving, selecting appropriate materials and finishes, addressing common renovation challenges, improving energy efficiency without compromising historic integrity, and balancing modern updates with respect for the home's original architectural vision. Emmert will also touch on what the Mills Act can impact your restoration project. Whether you are a homeowner, preservation enthusiast, architect, designer, or simply a fan of Mid-Century Modern design, this workshop will provide practical insights and inspiration for stewarding these iconic homes into the future.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

SATURDAY JULY 11 | 5 - 8 PM | Opening Reception End of the Trail: Route 66 Through California | Photography by Michael Graves | Ginger Elliott Center - Exhibition runs through August 1, 2026

End of the Trail: Route 66 Through California: Photographer Michael Graves follows the final miles of the Mother Road at its 100th anniversary, tracing the route from Needles at the California border through desert towns, inland corridors, and Los Angeles neighborhoods to the Pacific at the Santa Monica Pier. Created over a decade, these black-and-white photographs document motels, weathered signs, abandoned buildings, bridges, and the painted “66” shield. Spanning this entire California passage, the work preserves the physical remnants of Route 66 after one hundred years, where the road completes its westward journey.
