When I exhibit my body, said the artist in a written statement translated by artnet News, “it’s not a private body anymore but a public body that reproduces a scene."

Deborah de Robertis has been making iconoclastic work for over two decades. Assuming the position of "the muse". often literally mimicking an iconic pose in a painting, she inhabits and animates the muse's perspective in a performance.

These incendiary and disruptive performance events have occurred in prominent museums, urban monuments, political rallies and confrontations.

My nudity is seen through the context of

creation and image.

By occupying the space of the female muse, she reverses the dominance of the viewer's gaze upon a work of art and she challenges the classical, patriarchal and institutionalized politic of the established culture industry.

De Robertis' performance activates the muse and her power transforms the power dynamic of the Viewer/Object and empowers the viewer to examine and explore the roles and perceptions they are conventionally cast in and with which they identify.
