WOMAN’S GOD-GIVEN VALUE – LESSON 7
GOLDA MEIR
Before we look at Paul’s writings, I want to look at a modern-day example of God elevating a woman to rule politically over His nation of Israel. She is Golda Meir, Israel’s Prime Minister from February 26, 1969, to April 11, 1974.
She was born Golda Mabovitch, in 1898 in Kiev, Russia (modern Ukraine). Her family moved to America in 1906. She showed leadership skills as a youngster. She became politically active in 1915 at age 17 in Milwaukee.
She married Morris Meyerson in 1917 upon the condition that they would move to Palestine. The 1917 Balfour Declaration had just set aside a large section of Palestine designated to be a homeland where Jews could settle. World War I delayed their move there until 1921. She later shortened her name to Meir.
In the 1930’s she became deeply involved in Israeli politics. On May 14, 1948, she was one of 24 signatories of Israel’s Declaration of Independence as a new nation. In September 1948 she was appointed as Israel’s Minister to the Soviet Union with full power to sign treaties and act on Israel’s behalf. In 1949 she was elected to the legislature (Knesset) and served from 1949 to 1956 as Minister of Labour.
In 1956 Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, calling her “the best man in the government,” appointed her as Foreign Minister during which time she dealt with several military conflicts including war during a ten-year tenure. She retired in 1966 due to health issues.
She came out of retirement in 1969 when her party chose her to become Prime Minister. Later in 1969 her Israeli Labour Party won a majority (56) of the 120 Knesset seats. It is the only time in history that one single party ever won a majority in Israel, and it was under her leadership. (Israel has several parties.) She led well for five years.
In 1973 the Yom Kippur War occurred in September. The Muslim nations, together, attacked full scale on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). Knowing that it was the most holy Sabbath of the entire year, they expected very little, if any defense against them.
She was aware of the Arab build up and called up all the reserves. She was the first Prime Minister to ever be given sole power to do so. She appealed to U.S. President Richard Nixon for help, and he sent weaponry for defense. The war engaged and Israel won a solid victory.
She stepped down in April 1974 and passed away in December 1978. Yes, God had chosen a woman, Golda Meir, to rule over all the men of His nation Israel, bringing military victory, and the only politically unified legislature of their history.
When God chooses a woman, to let her rule politically or to be a pastor, who is man to say He is wrong?
