Message from the President & CEO

The Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) is monitoring the distressing situation stemming from the wildfires that have swept through the Northwest Territories and British Columbia. Our collective hearts go out to the communities and businesses that have been profoundly affected by these catastrophic events. The toll these events have taken is not lost on us, both in terms of the immediate impact and the ensuing economic challenges, I want to emphasize that TIAC is resolute in its commitment to stand by you during these trying times. We are in close communication with federal authorities and our industry allies to chart the most effective course of action to help where it is needed most. Our direct dialogue with Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada (ISED) serves as a testament to our determination to ensure your concerns are being addressed.

I urge each of you to prioritize your well-being, that of your loved ones and that of your employees. Your resilience is a source of inspiration. We are doing everything we can to provide support and we want you to know that our thoughts are with you during these trying times.

“TIAC is an extremely important association for the tourism industry. TIAC is our voice at the federal level and continuously fight for our industry.  I truly believe that without their hard work and dedication over the last three years that a lot of tourism operators would not have survived, possibly even the whole industry.  TIAC opened the eyes of the federal government as to the importance of tourism to Canada's GDP. The work done by TIAC is crucial for the survival of our industry. Over and above the advocacy, TIAC offers many great programs, educational webinars and networking opportunities that help us learn and improve our position in each province. Continue the great work, TIAC!”

Fires, Floods, and the Future: Sustainable Tourism's Potential to Support Climate Resilience

Contributed by: GreenStep Solutions

In the face of a summer season of wildfires that have broken records and impacted countless communities, both ecological and human, more and more discussion is happening in post-pandemic Canada about just how resilient our communities and businesses are when natural disasters arrive on their doorstep.

More than 30,000 people have been evacuated from their homes and towns, and a similar number are on evacuation alert. Tourists were ordered to stay away, and the industry rallied quickly to reopen, but the impacts were felt by many businesses.

“Community resilience is the ability of a community to recover from a disaster or persist sustainably in the face of a new, ongoing hardship.” - Urban Footprint.
