President's Report
By Holly Lofton
Lindsborg CVB
As I jot this April message to each of you, I am currently preparing for Messiah Festival of the Arts while also packing for Destination Statehouse in Washington D.C. I look forward to both!
Messiah Festival of the Arts truly marks the beginning of tourism in Lindsborg. Not knowing how this annual performance of Handel’s Messiah would be received or how it would open the floodgates to visitors, a handful of Swedes began practicing in the early months 1881. Anna Swensson’s primary purpose for leading these practices was to bring lonely Swedish settlers from the plains of central Kansas together to fellowship and to learn English, the Messiah being a perfect piece to provide this practice due to the repetitive nature of the composition. Mission accomplished, the first performance saw Anna step down to an invited male guest conductor to direct the formal performance, as this task was not considered appropriate for a woman in 1881. Today, this annual event is known to be the longest running performance of the Messiah in North America. And, thanks to a group of Lindsborg women, a statue of Anna Swensson now stands in Swensson Park, a tribute to her diligent spirit, and hard-working hands that constructed many of Lindsborg’s early successes as well as those of the Lutheran Church throughout the world. We continue to tell her story and the story of how tourism truly began in Lindsborg, not with our Swedish-ness that most correlate with Lindsborg, but with music and fellowship and the willingness to share with others.
What are you cultivating and sharing today? Who knows…whatever it is might just kick off things you never considered.
To the Stars,
Holly Lofton

February Lodging Report
TIAK has an agreement with Smith Travel Research (STR) to provide members with statewide reports on hotel occupancy each month. The following data is provided directly from STR:
Monthly and YTD Comparisons
Kansas had 61% property participation and 77% hotel room participation in February.
| |
|
The U.S. Travel Association published its latest Monthly Data Report, exclusively for U.S. Travel members. Here are key highlights from last month's report.
| |
Key January Highlights
-
Travel appetite started the year on a softer note, but overall growth continued. Air passenger growth remained positive, up 6% versus the prior year but lower than the double-digit growth seen through 2023. Foreign visits remained strong, up 24% YoY.
-
Hotel room demand continued a trend of slight contraction falling 1% versus the prior year, while short-term rental demand grew 1%, a lower rate than 2023.
-
A particular bright spot was that group room demand within the top 25 markets displayed solid growth of 9% relative to the prior year.
-
The outlook for the economy remains fairly optimistic due to the strength of the labor market, looser financial conditions and healthy household and nonfinancial corporate balance sheets. This has filtered through to slightly higher consumer sentiment in February.
-
Sentiment is also growing for upcoming leisure travel in 2024. The share of travelers reporting having travel plans within the next six months increased to 93% in January from 92% in December, according to Longwoods International’s monthly survey.
-
Travel price inflation (TPI) fell slightly in January as a result of falling transportation prices. Sticky services inflation should see relief from decelerating wage growth. However, upside risks stem from rising healthcare costs, supply chain disruptions and slowing labor supply.
