President's Report
Midsummer’s Festival, a very Swedish celebration, was celebrated this past Saturday in Lindsborg! The Swedes have long held festivities around the longest day of summer (truly this Thursday, but we celebrate on a weekend in Lindsborg) with friends, food, and fertility (get the scoop here). I truly enjoy this once-a-year celebration of Lindsborg’s heritage and the long daylight hours that are food for my soul. Extra hours for gardening, trail exercise, and travel. I love, love, love the long days of summer!
I was relating a bit of our recent anniversary trip to Colorado to a friend when she shared with me that she wished she had someone to travel with. She is single and feels uncomfortable asking someone to travel with her. Her response truly made me pause and reflect.
Honestly, I had not thought much about how my travel experiences are richer because of the PEOPLE that I travel WITH. I always enjoy traveling with my husband, my kids, and now…our grandkids, and good friends. My job has probably made me more apt to grab an available someone to travel with, and I enjoy seeing old and new things through the eyes of another.
Who do you travel with? I encourage you to seek out someone that may not be a seasoned traveler --someone shy, someone single, someone with a disability-- and take them on an adventure. The world looks a bit different through the eyes of a senior, a child, an immigrant, a significant other, or a good friend. We all experience the world around us in different ways and we all can learn more about how Kansas tourism assets impact those that we travel with. Ask the questions and take notes. What is outstanding? What needs to be improved? What could be added? What is unnecessary? What stood out? What will you remember?
Up for the challenge? Can’t wait to hear about your summer travels and who went with.
To the Stars,
Holly Lofton
