St. George’s Episcopal Church

Annual Meeting

January 26, 2025

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend our church’s Annual Meeting. On Sunday, January 26th, we will have one service at 10:30 am. Immediately following that service we will gather in the Parish Hall for a meal and a meeting.

Your participation in ministry within and outside of St. George’s has been phenomenal. As we gather to review 2024 and discuss 2025, your participation and input is needed.

Our vestry nominees for this year are: Mary Margaret Freeman, Beverly Hollingsworth, Clayann Gilliam Panetta, Jon Sharp, Mary Thorsberg to fill 3 year terms, and Nancy Ligon to fill a 2 year un-expired term. Information on the candidates was provided in a special email to you on 12/31/2024 or can be viewed at the button below.

Vestry Candidates

Special Vote at the Annual Meeting This Month

In addition to the important Congregational elections and officer reports at the meeting, we will also consider an amendment to the terms of the Gibson Lecture Fund. The officers sent a letter describing the fund and outlining changes recommended by two committees and the Vestry. A copy of the letter is linked below.

Under the terms of the original generous gift, the Vestry can only spend annual earnings up to 5% of the fund’s market value to invite outside speakers to St. George’s. The Vestry accepted those terms almost three decades ago. The proposed amendment allows the Vestry to continue to fund lectures, as it sees fit, but also to use the earnings for the entire Christian Education program. The change is permissive; we are not deciding to spend any money at the Annual Meeting. We are voting on giving the Vestry the authority to include earnings in the annual Christian Education budget, including for 2025 as needed.

The Church is permitted to amend the terms of some of its endowment funds, including the Gibson Fund, if the Vestry resolution that passed unanimously this summer is approved by 3/4 of the voters at the annual meeting. We are not voting whether to spend any of the original gift or its current balance. Spending the principal for any of the major endowment funds requires affirmative votes at two consecutive annual meetings. Please contact me with any questions or comments.

Join the Journey Update

St. George’s Family,

Happy New Year! I hope that the past few weeks have brought new or renewed commitments, new joys, and new opportunities. This year will certainly be an exciting and busy one for our St. George’s community as we continue our Journey together to find a new Rector, but I sit secure in the knowledge that we are more than equipped for the task at hand. My continued prayer is that the Lord sends the right person for us, at the right time, and I implore you all to pray with me and also continue the work of ensuring St. George’s is a welcoming, inclusive, and accepting place.

I want to first thank each and every one of you for your support in the 2025 Stewardship campaign. While money is never an easy conversation, it is a necessity in terms of securing the future of our Church. I hope that you have been keeping up with the updates from our esteemed treasurer, Jim Vogel, who along with the Stewardship Committee, was very committed to meeting and exceeding our goal! Not only does this help us with the day to day operations that keep St. George’s running smoothly, but it also provides us a foundation for the important work that the Search Committee will embark upon throughout the year.

Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Second, I would like to remind everyone that our Annual Parish Meeting will be Sunday, January 26th, directly after the 10:30 service. I invite everyone to attend, as it is an important overview of what we have accomplished as a Body of Christ this past year and also an opportunity to vote and invite in new leadership on the Vestry. While this might not seem like a part of the official Journey to a new Rector, it plays a crucial role in governance of the Episcopal Church as a whole and our role within it. We must always remember throughout our search who we are as a congregation, what we have done, and what we want to do, so that we will be able to invite in the Rector to best suit our needs.

While we are only a few weeks in to the new year, I know that 2025 will go by quickly and I look forward to continuing our Journey together.

Yours in Christ,

Molly M. Prewitt

Junior Warden

Music News

Notes on the Notes

by Stephen Karr

One question I have heard many times in recent months at St. George's—mostly indirectly—is "why don't we sing the Doxology anymore?" I understand...the Old Hundredth hymn tune is a wonderful, sturdy tune that is rightly beloved in the English-speaking world and perhaps beyond. This weekend we will sing that tune for the opening procession, and I expect it will be met with a great deal of enthusiasm.

I'd like to take this opportunity to explain my reasoning behind changing to a presentation hymn after the offertory music. For one, I think there is value to singing a larger percentage of the texts in our hymnal than seems to have been the norm at St. George's. There are some wonderful poems that reflect on scripture which are not yet known to us as a group, and others that might be set to tunes we have not yet learned. Dedicating the presentation hymn to a single verse of that single hymn removes one more opportunity to explore the rich volume that is the Hymnal 1982, which the longest-standing denominational hymnal in the United States if I am not mistaken—a testament to its enduring quality.

The second major reason in my mind has to do with the structure of the weekly communion service. Long before the Reformation, and even before the Eastern Orthodox church had split from Rome, the order of the Mass was established. This helped the growth and spread of the church in that it was always celebrated in the Latin language and that the structure of the service was the same from St. Patrick's Ireland to St. Nicholas's Turkey, allowing travelers from across the known world to take part in a familiar worship service, even if in an unfamiliar land. That structure, with remarkably little alteration, is still what we use in the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America, the official name given in the first American prayer book from 1789. For centuries, there have been sections of the service which are consistent from week to week (called the Ordinary) alongside readings and hymns that change to reflect the lectionary cycle (called the Proper).

The Ordinary of the Mass consists of six texts: Kyrie eleison ("Lord have mercy;" which we normally only use in Lent); Gloria in excelsis Deo ("Glory to God in the highest;" now called the "Hymn of Praise" to allow the use of other canticles from time to time); "Credo in unum Deum" (the Nicene Creed); Sanctus ("Holy, holy, holy Lord"); Benedictus ("Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord"); and Agnus Dei ("Lamb of God;" which we call the Fraction Anthem, allowing the more common use of "Christ our Passover"). Nearly every other corporate prayer, scripture reading and hymn rotated from week to week, but these texts, along with the Canon of the Mass—everything from the Sursum corda ("Lift up your hearts") to the Lord's Prayer—remained constant. In the same way that the architect of our beautiful building wrote about honoring the traditions and uses of earlier church buildings, such as having a single lectern (ambo) from which all scripture is proclaimed rather than building a separate lectern and a pulpit, I am honoring the historical liturgical tradition in not implying a seventh text of the Ordinary in our worship services. I hope the entire congregation will delight in singing the praise song that is Psalm 100 this weekend, and that the richness of the text over the five verses will prove enlightening.

Our February book is West With Giraffes By Lynda Rutledge

Part adventure, part historical saga, and part coming-of-age love story, the novel explores what it means to be changed by the grace of animals, the kindness of strangers, the passing of time and a story told before it is too late.

If you are on the Book Club email list, you will receive a reminder and login information for joining via the online (Zoom) option. How Can We Serve Others: #StGServes

Room in the Inn Host Nights

On November 7 one of the most important ministries we do at Saint George’s began its ninth season of serving at the Methodist Church Cottage a block south of The Commissary. On the first and third Thursdays of each month, November through March, we provide a delicious dinner, breakfast, a comfortable bed, showers, clothes washing, and a selection of needed items to those who are homeless.

Most importantly over the time we have served we have provided listening ears and comfort to literally hundreds of individuals. When our volunteers are “being in the moment” with our guests it is truly the best possible gift one can offer a “houseless” person in need.

While most of our volunteer opportunities have now filled there are few openings remaining to help. Just contact me at the email below if you have an interest.
