The Fifty Days of Easter

During the Fifty Days of Easter the liturgical color is white (but that doesn't show up well in our newsletter so I've substituted gold color) which we will be in until we go into red for the day of Pentecost on June 8.

Children are so very welcome at St. George’s!

Families, please know that children’s activity bags can be found in the Narthex! These bags include activities to help your entire family talk about the day’s scripture lessons. Please place bags in the basket under the coat rack after use so that we can refill them with supplies!

Children's Chapel

We offer Worship and Wonder (PK-2nd) and Holy Spirit Squad (3rd -5th) in Classroom B, and Our Journey with God (6th-12th) in Classroom A during our 10:30 a.m. service. Your children will experience an age-appropriate lesson based on the lectionary shared in the service. Please sign in your child in the Narthex before the service.

Healing Prayers each Sunday

If you would like to have healing prayers for yourself or through you for a family member or friend, members of the Order of the Daughters of the King or clergy will be available in the back of the Parish Hall near the Bookshoppe to administer healing prayers with laying on of hands and anointing if desired. Just go to the back after you take communion or at the end of the service where they will meet you for prayer.

Are You Getting All of the TIP News?

Because of the length of the TIP newsletter, some email programs cut it mid-way and to see the full document you must click on the indicator or emoji indicated by your email program to expand to the rest of the document (usually located where the TIP cuts off). The TIP ends with the Prayer List, List of Staff and contact footer. If you are not seeing those items, look for the way to fully open and extend this document.

A Message from Rev. Dorothy

Taking a Deep Breath

Rev. Dorothy

The months of summer bring changes to us in various forms.  Typically there is a break from school and a change to our day to day routine.  Camps commence, cars are fine- tuned for longer than usual trips, and families hold reunions.  As one whose career was largely in academia, I often made it a point to “take a deep breath” during the summer.

Well, St. George’s moves on as the search for the next rector is underway.  The Church Profile is published, no doubt applicants will respond, and the Discernment (Search) Committee will continue to fulfill its mission.

We have announced the summer Worship Schedule for June and July.  As the Church Staff continues to serve through summer, we will also experience moments designed to “take a deep breath” as the fall season approaches.  Your continued prayers and support will be deeply appreciated.

The musical selections for this concert were picked by Billie Moore and were intended for a concert last year which was delayed until this year. It will also feature a couple of popular music selections, selections from movies using the music from Hans Zimmer, selections from The King and I, plus A Salute to Jazz. Notes on the Notes

by Stephen Karr

Do you like to sing, but are worried about committing to the full schedule of Coventry Choir? Please consider joining us for two Summer Choir dates: July 13 and August 10. Singers who are not regular members of Coventry Choir should plan to gather in the choir room around 9:15 to find vestments to be prepared for a rehearsal at 9:30 in the church to prepare the morning’s choral repertoire. Anyone who wants to join us is welcome!

As we wrap up the program year for music at St. George's, I am looking forward to one event in particular: Sanctifica's annual concert on June 1 at 2:00 p.m. The program is a bit broader than the repertoire we usually hear from them in church, including music for the movies and popular tunes. The concert is given in memory of founding director Billie Moore, and promises to be a fitting honor for him and a great time.

Please also watch out for summer musical events at St. George's. We are planning for some fun, family-friendly events and would love to see you there!

Also, on an extracurricular note, a recording I conducted is now available on all major streaming platforms. It is of an opera entitled The Queen, My Lord, Is Dead, which I helped premiere in 2022 before moving to Memphis. We made a professional recording at the studio at UCLA in March of 2023 and it is finally out in the world. We will present an excerpt at a new works forum sponsored by Opera Memphis at Calvary Church on May 22 with members of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, but to hear the entire piece you can visit https://www.thequeenopera.com for directions on where to find it. It imagines the last moments of Lady Macbeth, between the famous sleepwalking scene and when she is announced dead later in Act V of the Shakespeare play. It is exciting for me to see it become more widely available, and I hope you might enjoy listening to it.

Rehearsal Schedule for St. Cecilia (Childrens) Choir

Rehearsals for the St. Cecilia choir continue from 12:15-1:00 PM on Sundays: May 25 and June 1. St. Cecilia Choir will next sing on Sunday June 8 (Pentecost). On the days of performances, there will be an additional rehearsal at 9:30 AM before the second service begins.

Any child is welcome to join us, no matter the age or level of ability. Also, for each rehearsal, I will need an additional adult who has been Safe Church trained to be in the room. You will not be asked to lead rehearsal or do anything other than occupy space.

Please fill out the Google form below if you have a child who would like to perform with us

Education for Ministry Program Changes: New Ways to Explore and Learn!

Education for Ministry, offered here at St. George’s for over 30 years, will look very different when our new group starts up in September 2025!

First of all, there will be two opportunities to connect with EfM: one will be EfM Classic, which is the program most of us are familiar with: a four-year program (participants only commit to one year at a time, however) that will cover the following topics for the next four years: The Journey with God, Following Jesus, Listening to the Spirit, and Engaging the World.

The new (and exciting!) opportunity to be a part of EfM is the one-year program called EfM: Wide Angle. This program is a one-year commitment that invites participants to experience an introduction to scripture, history, spiritual practices, ethics, and theological reflection. Participants in EfM: Wide Angle will meet with the EfM Classic group (at St. George’s on Monday evenings from 6:45-8:45 PM).

If you’ve considered EfM but the idea of a four-year program has held you back, take advantage of this new learning opportunity to experience the program and join a living, loving, supportive community!

For more information, see Verlinda Henning in person, call her at 901.490.1714, or email VerlindaH@aol.com or talk with any of these EfM class members:

Reception with the Artists, this Saturday, May 24

Three local artists whose works we've seen in earlier shows have come together to provide a very special expanded exhibit of their works in this Three Man Show, to hang from April 30 to June 1. Wine & Cheese Reception, Saturday, May 24, 2-4 pm

Joe Umphress has drawn and painted since he was sixteen working with watercolor and pen and ink. He studied advertising and design at Auburn University, but wound up in a career in mortgage banking. When he retired in 2006, he needed a hobby and took up his art again. He now paints in acrylic and paints with a group of artist friends twice a week. Art and travel with his wife Linda are how he now spends his time.

Marc Wheetley is a Fayette County resident who has focused on painting in retirement. He is more self-taught than formally pertained. Portraits done in oil is his favorite type of artwork, but he also paints animal portraits and other works in pastels. “I am fascinated by the way in which the slightest change in a mouth or an eye can make such a profound change in the subject’s appearance and I notice the same effect in animals as in people”

E.D. Bynum Jr. Like many artists his path to becoming a full-time artist was interrupted by a different career as an entomologist. Still during this time, the Lord provided opportunities for him to continue learning and developing his art skills by being involved in the West Tennessee Watercolor Society. In 2019, he retired from his position as an entomologist and is now able to fully devote time to his artwork. “Whether painting landscapes, portraits, or still life, I try telling a story” he says. As you look at his paintings and drawings he hopes you see and feel a story from maybe your own memories.
