November 21, 2024 - Last Sunday of Epiphany, Beginning of Advent
"We gather as one humanity at God’s Table. We share a journey of discovery as a welcoming community of ever-deepening faith. We rejoice in serving one another and our neighbors through the love and grace of God in Christ. Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you are part of the tapestry that makes us one."
Can you feel the excitement at St. George’s? I can. It’s difficult to determine who has more energy every week — the pre-school children who run to classes each week day morning when I come by at 9:30; children and teens with their boundless enthusiasm for worship and EYC events; or the smiling adults happy to be a part of our worship and service community. Each month when I usher, there are new faces joining us, and many of them have become repeat visitors. This year’s Stewardship effort is even led by a new committee full of volunteers! This Sunday you’ll feel the church’s Stewardship excitement as we begin a series of Minutes for Mission along with the regular announcements.
As we soak up the emotion this fall, we are reminded this is the season where the church re-commits to its calling. We ask you to prayerfully grow with us in dedication to the Lord and each other. That calling combines love and talent to extend throughout the congregation and across our ministry partners in the community. For about 200 families here, it also includes a financial pledge for 2025. We invite you to be one the stewards of St. George’s, joining the 90-year history of faithfulness that remains so present here right now.
You can pledge via the form mailed last month or via the website https://stgchurch.org/giving/. See the Stewardship Update below for details about the excellent progress in this year’s campaign.

Stewardship Update
We have already received about 70% of the dollar amount for the 2025 stewardship goal. We have asked the congregation to consider increasing their annual giving by 6% over 2024. Through the end of last week, the average pledge increase represented growth of 10.7%. This generous response puts us ahead of last year in the middle of November on a smaller number of pledges received. That is indeed an exciting response. Included in the 2025 total are five new pledges, an important signal of growth at St. George’s during our transition to a new rector. Thank you to every person who has pledged to date and thank you to everyone who is still considering a pledge for next year. We should be able to move forward in December with a preliminary budget, including more programs and the cost of the search for the next priest to lead us.
We still have about 80 pledges outstanding that we are eagerly awaiting. Church officers have started their “reminder” telephone calls to those who have not submitted their stewardship commitment for 2024. In addition, we are reaching out to every member during the stewardship campaign to connect with all who share in our journey. Please pay attention to a call from “unknown” number and take time to text or call back if we miss you on the first several attempts. We want to speak with you and hear what you have to tell us.

The Journey Continues
Dear friends,
Recently our Junior Warden, Molly Prewitt, recorded a video for St. George’s describing insights from the congregational survey we took this year. In the video, we learn that we are a clergy-focused congregation, a type of congregation that has both great areas of strength and potential areas of difficulty.
We also learned that as a congregation we have ideas about how to sustain, grow, and strengthen St. George’s. We want St. George’s to grow in breadth (by incorporating new members into the life of the church) and depth (growing in our experience of worship). I won’t share the details again, but I encourage you to view the video.
See the video here at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U42I4tliCTA&t=32s
After you've watched Molly, please CLICK HERE to complete a short survey.
Look for another video to be published soon. But in the meantime, I encourage you to Join the Journey! Our Rector transitional period is like a journey in which we first journey inward (grow in self-awareness as a congregation) and then journey outward (seek out a new Rector to lead us in implementing the vision of our church). I urge you to embark in faith by offering up your time and talents to the Lord in the ministries of the church. In particular, there two opportunities for service that I would like to share with you.
First, in January 2025 we will have our Parish Annual Meeting at which we will elect five new members of the Vestry. If you would like to be a part of seeing our congregation’s dreams and visions come to fruition, serving on the Vestry is a great way to do it. You will meet those serving in various ministries of the church, work with others to provide oversight of church operations, and lead the way in growing St. George’s.
Second, we are looking for three delegates from St. George’s to attend the Diocesan Convention next year. This is a perfect way to connect with others from around the Diocese and learn about the Diocese of West Tennessee.
If you would like to serve in either of these ways, please contact me, Molly Prewitt, or Rev. Dorothy.

Notes on the Notes
Many of you know that I also teach in the music school at the University of Memphis, as the opera music director. If you were ever interested in seeing what I do there, the school is co-producing one of the masterpieces of the 20th century with Opera Memphis, The Rake's Progress, which features music by Igor Stravinsky and text by W. H. Auden and Chester Kallmann. The opera traces the ruin of young Tom Rakewell at the hands of Nick Shadow, and his ultimate redemption by his betrothed, Anne Trulove. Performances are Friday Nov. 22 at 7:30 and Sunday Nov. 24 at 3:00 at the new Scheidt Family Performing Arts Center on campus. If you are interested in attending, you can get a 25% discount on any tickets by using code StephenKarr at checkout.

St. George's Book Club Meets Tuesday, December 10
Our December book is Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Fan Pelt. Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus at the aquarium forms a remarkable friendship with Tova, a nighttime janitor. He uses every trick his old inveterate body can muster to unearth the truth of Tova's son's disappearance off a boat. This debut novel is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible.
We will meet in the Church Library at 7 pm, bring a drink or munchies to share. If you are on the Book Club email list, you will receive a reminder and login information for joining via the online (Zoom) option. If you would like to join the group, contact Kit Decker at kit.decker@earthlink.net to be put on the email group list for the Book Club to receive announcements and meeting information.
The Book Club Schedule for reading year 2024-25 has been posted to the church website. You can access it here. A new trifold brochure for the Reading Year 2024-25 with a description of Book Club, scheduled dates and a brief synopsis of each book is available for pickup in the Bookshoppe or at the meetings.

Thursday Night Bible Study Studies The Psalms
Psalms have held a central place in Christian Church’s worship for two thousand years. Psalms are poetic prayers and form what have been called a “school of prayer.” They teach us how to bring ourselves before God. Scripture is God talking to us, Psalms are us talking to God. Psalms demonstrate that all of life is lived under God’s loving sovereignty---all of life---both its darkest and brightest moments.
As poetry, Psalms require us to stretch our imaginations, to step outside of ourselves and listen carefully. As Hebrew poetry they are intensely compact and at the same time capable of having multiple meanings in a single line.
Please join St. George’s Episcopal Church’s Thursday Evening Bible Study online at 7:00 P.M. each week, for an amazing, in-depth study of the Book of Psalms that you have never experienced and will probably never again experience. Contact the class’s facilitator, Dr. Jimmy Elam at jimmyelam@hotmail.com, for further information, handouts and weekly Zoom link.

Room in the Inn Host Nights
On November 7 one of the most important ministries we do at Saint George’s began its ninth season of serving at the Methodist Church Cottage a block south of The Commissary. On the first and third Thursdays of each month, November through March, we provide a delicious dinner, breakfast, a comfortable bed, showers, clothes washing, and a selection of needed items to those who are homeless.
Most importantly over the time we have served we have provided listening ears and comfort to literally hundreds of individuals. When our volunteers are “being in the moment” with our guests it is truly the best possible gift one can offer a “houseless” person in need.
While most of our volunteer opportunities have now filled there are few openings remaining to help, including being an overnight Shepherd on the first Thursday evening in March. Just contact me at the email below if you have an interest.

Artists’ Link was founded in 1989 to be a resource and support group for Memphis area visual artists and to be a link between artists and the community. Through the years, Artists’ Link has supported local art in many ways and since 2011 has co-sponsored “Incognito,” an art auction that helps fund educational programs at Memphis Botanic Garden. Group art exhibitions are also a vital part of Artists’ Link’s purpose and introduce member artists and their work to new and loyal communities of art lovers. The group holds monthly meetings that are open to the public. Please visit the website: www.artistslink.org and view the group’s activities on Facebook: Artists’ Link, Memphis Area Artists.
A portion of the proceeds from sales in The Gallery supports the work of Carpenter Art Garden, which brings the arts to the underserved Binghampton community. St. George’s Art Gallery is located within St. George’s Episcopal Church and is accessed through the front doors. The Gallery is open M – F from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Seeking Episcopal young adult input in ‘Toward a New Generation of Leaders’ survey
Share Your Voice: Local Young Adults Invited to Take Part in ‘Toward a New Generation of Leaders’ Survey
The Episcopal Church’s Department of Faith Formation wants to hear directly from young adults ages 18-32 in our community! If you’re in this age group, your insights are invaluable to a project focused on understanding the unique gifts and challenges of Gen Z ministry within the church. Your responses will help shape new programs and resources that resonate with today’s young Episcopalians.
The survey—available online here—is open until Dec. 2.

We are Here for You
The past several years has affected all of us in unforeseen ways. Do you need help? St. George's is YOUR community.. If you need help--be it spiritual, mental, financial, physical, or emotional--the wisest action for you to take would be to reach out to a discreet resource that cares about you. There is no shame in saying, "I need help." It is a courageous act of self-care.
We have confidential prayer warriors wanting to add you to their list. Let us know of any burden or joy you'd like to share.
