Stewardship In-Gathering This Sunday

Please Give Generously of Your Time, Talents and also Your Money

As we enter the season of Thanksgiving, I am struck by how much I am thankful for St. George’s and its impact on my family. While, to some, this may feel like a cheap cliche, I am genuinely in awe of the church and its place in mine and Mathilda’s life. I was certainly reminded this Summer during Vacation Bible School and again very recently at Trunk-or-Treat. These two events alone showcased the talents and gifts of the congregation but, possibly more importantly, displayed the extent to which our church community touches and impacts the lives of so many. However, in the moment as we are wrapped up in the “what” and the “why” of a particular event, we may forget the “how”.

When we come together in celebration and worship, we know that our focus is, ultimately, on the Lord and service unto his name, our “what” and “why”. The “how”, while many times more concrete in nature, can also be more difficult to engage. This is because it requires something more of us than simply being present. It requires our time, our attention, our energy, our money, our Stewardship. Events like Trunk-or-Treat, VBS, and even worship on a given Sunday require more than just our presence; they require a host of people, planning, and resources in order to come to fruition. So, we join planning committees, sign up for a shift or a dish, and give our time and money in support to our Church Community.

I think back to the focus on VBS this past June and the story of Noah, who was given an impossible task but nevertheless, he committed to the Stewardship that was required of him and in the end he was rewarded. In this season of Thanks please do not forget the Giving. Please give generously of your time and also your money to this very special and important place, St. George’s Episcopal Church.

This Sunday is our Stewardship Ingathering. If you have not yet turned in your pledge card, please bring it to put it in the basket for our Bishop's blessing this Sunday or fill it out online, see Giving Online below.

Room in the Inn First Host Night Tonight

On November 7 one of the most important ministries we do at Saint George’s begins its ninth season of serving at the Methodist Church Cottage a block south of The Commissary. On the first and third Thursdays of each month, November through March, we provide a delicious dinner, breakfast, a comfortable bed, showers, clothes washing, and a selection of needed items to those who are homeless.

Most importantly over the time we have served we have provided listening ears and comfort to literally hundreds of individuals. When our volunteers are “being in the moment” with our guests it is truly the best possible gift one can offer a “houseless” person in need.

While most of our volunteer opportunities have now filled there are few openings remaining to help, including being an overnight Shepherd on the first Thursday evening in March. Just contact me at the email below if you have an interest.

A Message From Our Senior Warden

A question I have heard from several folks recently is, “Where are we at with our Rector Search Process?”

In the Journey of our Rector Transition period, we are currently at Milestone #3.

Looking back, Milestone #1 was “The Journey Begins.” Beginning in February 2024, Bishop Phoebe met with us, summoned us to this journey, and led us in embracing a healthy rector transition by taking the time to say goodbye to Mother Dorothy Wells and honor her years of ministry to St. George’s.

Next, from April to June we worked on Milestone #2, “Our Companions along the Way.” This milestone involved searching for an Interim Rector, meeting Canon Rob (Canon to the Ordinary), and working with a consultant to obtain an assessment of our congregation.

Milestone #3, where we currently are, involves taking the First Steps of the journey. Journeying to this milestone has taken a little longer than we originally anticipated, as journeys often do. Have you ever had that experience of trying to get out on the road for a trip? As you get close to departure, many things come to mind that need to be done before setting out on the trip. In the same way, we also paused to wait for the arrival of our Diocesan Canon to the Ordinary and our Interim Rector, Rev. Dorothy. Next, we will share with you the insights learned from our Congregational Assessment this summer. This will be done through a series of short YouTube videos, which are currently being designed by Rev. Dorothy, Molly Prewitt, and myself. The Search Committee (and the Vestry) will work to internalize those insights because they will be the foundation of our next Milestone.

If you missed Rev. Dorothy's introductory video "Join the Journey," you can view it on our YouTube channel here.

In Milestone #4, the Search team will write a parish profile and position profile (clergy job description). From there, we will begin to interview candidates for Rector, and the journey continues.

Will you pray for the Vestry, staff, Rev. Dorothy, and the Search Committee? Thank you for your prayers, patience, and support as we work through the steps of this journey.

Perry Pennington

Senior Warden

St. George's Offers Opportunities to Multi-task on Sundays

Many of your fellow parishioners multi-task on Sundays as children's chapel teachers, choir members, lectors, lay readers, ushers, altar guild members and the like, but here's a really unique talent as Andrew Proctor simultaneously plays the french horn while conducting the Sanctifica ensemble last Sunday!

It's a little hard to see the baton in his right hand, but I assure you it was keeping the ensemble together in time!

Clean Up Day, Nov. 16, 9am - 12 pm

The church needs your contribution of time to prepare our building and grounds for a new season! Primary projects will be cleaning windows and walls, clearing the north forest of fallen limbs, and, if needed weeding planting beds. Please bring your gloves, digging tools, and a broom. While the grounds are being cleaned up, the altar guild members will be doing a "deep clean" of the chancel, nave and narthex in preparation for Advent. Refreshments and water will be provided.

Save the dates!

"Deck the Halls" - Sunday Nov. 24th after the 10:30 service, we will hold an intergenerational activity to decorate the church for Christmas. We invite the entire parish to this special event. Immediately following the 10:30am service, we will gather in the Parish Hall for some special treats and then divide into groups to help set up trees and "Deck the Halls" in preparation for the next week's Advent Procession. There will be children and youth activities, ornament making, cookie decoration and more in the Parish Hall. We will also have Advent wreaths available to assemble for your own home (suggested donation $10 for wreath).

Turkey Tuesday, Nov. 26, our annual communal Thanksgiving Dinner for those who might otherwise celebrate Thanksgiving alone.

Gobble! Gobble! Gobble! "Turkey Tuesday" plans are underway!

We recognize that the holidays may not bring us all into communion with one another as they used to. Whether the distance is too far, the opportunity hasn't presented itself this year or you just want to spend some special time with your Family and Friends here at St. George's....we hope you make plans to join us for a special Thanksgiving luncheon on Tuesday, November 26th from 11:30am to 1pm. We will have prayers of Thanksgiving, enjoy a delicious plated Thanksgiving meal, and spend treasured time in fellowship together. Roast turkey, ham, dressing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberry salad, lettuce salad, rolls and homemade pies are on the menu! If you need transportation to and from the luncheon, please email KarriePlease RSVP to Karrie LaCroix by Wednesday, November 20th if you plan to attend! If health or other concerns limit your ability to get out that day, please email Karrie and we will make sure that you get a meal delivered to you! We look forward to seeing you!

Coming in Advent - Save the Dates!

Sunday, Dec. 1 - Tri-church Advent Procession, we will again join Germantown United Methodist and Germantown Presbyterian churches in a procession from church to church that includes hymns, lighting of the Advent wreaths and a short homily.

Sunday, Dec. 8 - Advent Lessons & Carols, a special 3 p.m. service where we gather to hear the Advent lessons and sing carols heralding the coming birth of our Lord.

Friday, Dec. 13 - Candles & Carols, hosted by Lancers for adults of the parish, where we gather for a social hour, potluck and the singing of Christmas songs and carols led by Exultemus.

New Driveway Gates

You have probably noticed that driveway gates to the back parking lot have been installed but at this time are not in operation. This is a part of the security upgrades being made for our church and preschool property. We are waiting for approval from the City of Germantown. More information will come as to how and when they will operate.

Music News

Notes on the Notes

Our busy season for music at St. George's continues...after a well-attended concert by the Concordia Orchestra on Oct. 27, Sanctifica's contribution to the 10:30 service and a wonderful combined Evensong with the choir from Calvary Church in downtown Memphis this past Sunday, we look forward to Sanctifica joining us for Sunday morning worship once again on Christ the King Sunday, Nov. 24.

Following that, we come to the season of Advent, where our choir will once again participate in the Advent Procession on Dec. 1 and present our annual Advent service of Lessons and Carols on Dec. 8. Thanks to the vestry, we have been able to renew Kane Bradley's contract to lead the children's music program, and are looking forward to getting that group going once more. If your child would like to participate, we will be holding rehearsals on Wednesday afternoons from 5:15-6:00. If your child would like to sing, please get in touch! The plan is for the children to sing at Lessons and Carols, and also at the Christmas Eve children's pageant.

St. George's Book Club Meets Next Tuesday, November 12

Our November book is A Calamity of Souls by David Baldacci. In this novel two attorneys, Jack Lee a white lawyer in Virginia and Desiree DuBose a black lawyer from Chicago, team to represent a black man charged with killing a white couple. On their own neither one can stop the prosecution's deliberate march towards a guilty verdict and the electric chair, but together the pair fight for what once seemed impossible: a chance for a fair trial and true justice.

We will meet in the Church Library at 7 pm, bring a drink or munchies to share. If you are on the Book Club email list, you will receive a reminder and login information for joining via the online (Zoom) option. If you would like to join the group, contact Kit Decker at kit.decker@earthlink.net to be put on the email group list for the Book Club to receive announcements and meeting information.

The Book Club Schedule for reading year 2024-25 has been posted to the church website. You can access it here. A new trifold brochure for the Reading Year 2024-25 with a description of Book Club, scheduled dates and a brief synopsis of each book is available for pickup in the Bookshoppe or at the meetings.

Thursday Night Bible Study Studies The Psalms

Psalms have held a central place in Christian Church’s worship for two thousand years. Psalms are poetic prayers and form what have been called a “school of prayer.” They teach us how to bring ourselves before God. Scripture is God talking to us, Psalms are us talking to God. Psalms demonstrate that all of life is lived under God’s loving sovereignty---all of life---both its darkest and brightest moments.

As poetry, Psalms require us to stretch our imaginations, to step outside of ourselves and listen carefully. As Hebrew poetry they are intensely compact and at the same time capable of having multiple meanings in a single line.

Please join St. George’s Episcopal Church’s Thursday Evening Bible Study online at 7:00 P.M. each week, for an amazing, in-depth study of the Book of Psalms that you have never experienced and will probably never again experience. Contact the class’s facilitator, Dr. Jimmy Elam at jimmyelam@hotmail.com, for further information, handouts and weekly Zoom link.

Navigating Life’s Challenges: Pathways to Resilience

"What does not kill me makes me stronger." - Nietzsche

Next Tuesday, November 12, our esteemed Lunch & Learn presenter, Dr. Sean Phipps, will share his research and experiences from over 30 years at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where he served as Chair of the Department of Psychology. At St. Jude, he observed the surprisingly positive adjustment of children with cancer, who not only manage the difficult challenges of their illness, but oftentimes demonstrate an exceptional capacity to thrive despite the obstacles that they face. How do they do it, and what can we learn from them to help us face the inevitable challenges in our own lives?

New Exhibit by Artists' Link Nov. 3 - 24

Artists’ Link, a non-profit group of over 150 visual artists, announces its annual Winter Art Show at St. George’s Episcopal Church Gallery. The show opened in the Gallery on November 1st and will be on display until November 24th.

Artwork by Julie Wiklund

Artwork by Lance White

Artists’ Link was founded in 1989 to be a resource and support group for Memphis area visual artists and to be a link between artists and the community. Through the years, Artists’ Link has supported local art in many ways and since 2011 has co-sponsored “Incognito,” an art auction that helps fund educational programs at Memphis Botanic Garden. Group art exhibitions are also a vital part of Artists’ Link’s purpose and introduce member artists and their work to new and loyal communities of art lovers. The group holds monthly meetings that are open to the public. Please visit the website: www.artistslink.org and view the group’s activities on Facebook: Artists’ Link, Memphis Area Artists.

A portion of the proceeds from sales in The Gallery supports the work of Carpenter Art Garden, which brings the arts to the underserved Binghampton community. St. George’s Art Gallery is located within St. George’s Episcopal Church and is accessed through the front doors. The Gallery is open M – F from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Share Your Voice: Local Young Adults Invited to Take Part in ‘Toward a New Generation of Leaders’ Survey

The Episcopal Church’s Department of Faith Formation wants to hear directly from young adults ages 18-32 in our community! If you’re in this age group, your insights are invaluable to a project focused on understanding the unique gifts and challenges of Gen Z ministry within the church. Your responses will help shape new programs and resources that resonate with today’s young Episcopalians.

We are Here for You

The past several years has affected all of us in unforeseen ways. Do you need help? St. George's is YOUR community.. If you need help--be it spiritual, mental, financial, physical, or emotional--the wisest action for you to take would be to reach out to a discreet resource that cares about you. There is no shame in saying, "I need help." It is a courageous act of self-care.

We have confidential prayer warriors wanting to add you to their list. Let us know of any burden or joy you'd like to share.

Contact Rev. Dorothy White or Eileen in the church office (901) 754-7282 for clergy assistance for your special needs.
