Administrator's Corner

Happy Monday, TJ!

Just a reminder that this week's schedule is a bit different. There will be no school for students today or tomorrow. On Wednesday all students will remain remote, following a typical Monday schedule. Thursday will be the only in-person learning day for the A-L cohort, and Friday will be the only in-person learning day for the M-Z cohort. We hope that your students are able to rest up and take a break from screen time today and tomorrow!

Don't forget - today is the final day for students to submit their portraits for this year's yearbook (details below), so please have them do that if they haven't already.

Thanks, Spartans!

¡Feliz lunes, TJ!

¡Gracias, espartanos!

These students have significantly improved over the past few months in the following areas: Attendance, Behavior, Grades, and Self-Advocacy. Congratulate them!

Alejandro Lopez (9th) - Alejandro had made vast improvements in attendance and grades so far this semester as compared to the fall. Way to go, Alejandro!

Armon Baker (10th) - Armon worked really hard to pull up his grade at the end of semester 1. He has started out this school year much stronger and participates in US History on a daily basis. Nice work, Armon!

Josiah Gordan (10th) - This semester, Josiah has been advocating for himself consistently and has made it clear he wants to get straight As. He is very conscientious, always checking his grades, and will redo an assignment if he only gets one wrong. He has been more active in class as well. Overall, he is displaying all of the SPARTAN values

Joshua Zapata-Correa (11th) - Josh worked really had at the end of semester 1 to improve his Psychology grade, particularly in terms of using feedback from his teacher to revise his final project. He has started out semester 2 strong and currently has an A+!!

  • Thanks to Dana Starbuck and the NHS students who participated in a Valentine's Day event to reach out and send Valentine Greetings to senior citizens in care facilities and at home. Working with the 'Cupid Crew,' they made and sent e-Cards to elder friends in the community.

PTO News
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the PTO meeting last week. There was lots of information on a variety of topics. For the details, please visit the PTO webpage for the meeting minutes, financial report and the meeting recording.

Do you have an eye for design? The PTO is looking for parents who are interested in brainstorming ideas for the front entrance to the school. Freshening up the front area will make TJ more attractive and usable for both students and visitors. Two years ago, the PTO starting working on ideas to create a more appealing entryway to the school. The bond project construction on the lobby renovation extended an extra year and then the pandemic bumped our plans out again. It is time to get back to it and we need your help to make it happen. Some ideas include using more hardscape, new banners, art, sculptures, new concrete benches or other seating.

This is a temporary work group to come up with a vision to share with the school administrators.  If you are itching to put your creative energy to work for TJ, we'd love to have you be part of this group!  If you are interested, contact Eileen Robinson at tjhspto@gmail.com.

5th Annual Thomas Jefferson High School Auction
The Auction is an opportunity to support TJ and will run April 11th  -  April 15th.  We acknowledge the impact that COVID has had on businesses, families, schools and students in the past year, and feel that now more than ever, we lean on each other for the support we all need to thrive during this time. We are working to gather donations and we strongly encourage our TJ families to support those businesses that support our school each year. Proceeds from this year's Auction will be dedicated to helping those in our TJ community, funding our Classroom Grant program and building improvements.

Any and all donations are appreciated...
  • Do you own a business that can donate goods or services?
  • Request a donation from the places you already know, love and frequent....they rarely say no to a donation for a public school!
  • Reach out to businesses and request donations such as restaurant certificates, merchandise, vacation and travel opportunities, spa packages, professional services, and tickets to entertainment, cultural and sporting events.
The TJHS 2021 Auction Letter provides additional information on the Auction and has the TJ Tax ID #, as donations to TJ are tax-deductible.  This can be given to businesses when requesting a donation. Donation information can be submitted directly into the Auction system here: https://tjhs.ptapal.com.

If you have any questions or would like to be on the Auction Committee, please reach out to Megan Perkins (megandperkins@gmail.com) or Becca Mahoney (beccaandjoemahoney@gmail.com)

Food and Nutrition Services
The FNS (Food and Nutrition Services) team had a meeting this morning with folks from the Colorado Food Cluster (CFC).  CFC has launched a new initiative to deliver 7-day meal boxes with (7) suppers and (7) snacks to families in Denver.  They are currently working with various charter schools, but they have the capacity to expand to other DPS schools.

FNS is not "involved" with this effort as we are not the vendor providing the suppers/snacks.  However CFC is working directly with DPS schools to sign up families at no charge.  The meals are available for kids ages 6-18 years old.  Below is the sign up form and is available in English and Spanish.

Our District GT Partner is Brian Beard, brian_beard@dpsk12.org, and you may receive GT newsletters from his office with internship and university opportunities.

We also need senior parents to lead these activities and help start new traditions.  Are you creative, like to organize, or are good with technology?  We need to improvise and remain flexible with our current situation, yet we can do this if we all pitch in for these AMAZING Seniors.  We will begin meeting regularly starting in January.  Please reach out to one of the class contacts below to find out how you can help and look for an updated newsletter after Thanksgiving with kick-off meeting details.  Go Spartans!
