TJ Spartans,
Punctuality is important, even remotely. Please be sure you are logging into your classes on time. If you are 5 minutes late to class, you will be marked Tardy. If you are more than 20 minutes late, you will be marked Absent.
If you arrive to class after 5 minutes or more for any reason, you should reach out to your teacher(s). To excuse tardies and absences, parents and guardians should call the automated attendance line at 720-423-7040. This line is for leaving messages only. You can also send an email to rebecca_moore@dpsk12.org.

Chromebook and Materials Distribution - By Appointment Only
|
Dear Spartan Families,
TJHS will offer additional drive through pick up opportunities for Chromebooks and class materials distribution on Tuesday 9/15 and Thursday 9/17 by appointment only. If you would like to schedule a three-hour pick-up window please fill out our request form here: https://forms.gle/h381kzTdGeEnXTa46 The request form helps us ensure we have the proper level of staffing to handle demand. If you are returning damaged technology please make sure the power cord is returned with the unit. Due to high demand across the district we are out of Wifi Hotspots and don't know when additional units will be made available. In order to comply with Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and Denver Public School Nursing Services, we ask that families remain in their cars at all times in order to practice social distancing and allow TJ staff to deliver the items to your car. (See map below) We will place it in the trunk, backseat or hand it through a window. If you are on foot or bike please wear a mask and maintain 6-feet of distance from other people. TJ staff will be wearing masks for everyone's protection. If you have any questions please email Andrew_skari@dpsk12.org.
Estimadas familias espartanas,

Community Resources for Advisement
|
Hello TJ,
As you may have seen in the news the past couple weeks, students around DPS have been asking for more education and resources regarding healthy relationships and gender violence protection. At TJ our Challenge 5280 Club has been working this exact topic the past two years. As part of the Challenge 5280 club's work we have partnered with several community resources to educate our kids and keep them safe. With our new advisement class offered daily we are going to spend the next two weeks focusing in on the following topics:
During Advisement Week of 14th:
- Students will be shown video from one of our Project Pave contacts, Derek McCoy. Video content will be around consent.
- Conversation with mental health, counseling and admin will follow
- Overflow room will be available for students who need individual support, given the nature of this topic
During Advisement Week of 21st:
- We have asked experts from END Violence, Denver Health and the District Attorney's Office to come in to Advisement and be part of a panel for students (more info on speakers below).
- Questions will be submitted before so there are talking points for them, if student's do not feel comfortable asking "live"
- Overflow room will be available for students who need individual support
We highly encourage that all students attend and participate in these discussions over the next two weeks however we understand that if you as a parent do not want your child to participate.
Speakers for the week of 9/21:
Megan Healy:
Health Educator at the Denver Health clinic inside TJ. She has a background in supporting survivors of sexual violence and can discuss all topics around sexual health, healthy relationships, consent and communication, and more.
Becca Tiell-Krekeler, MSW, LSW
END Violence Specialist at TJ. She specializes in working with victims/survivors of any form of violence. She provides individual therapy, groups, advocacy, and education.
Denver District Attorney Office-Danielle Robinson
12 years of experience in the DA's office and most recently serves as our Sexual Assault Specialist. She primarily handles most of the filing decisions on adult sexual assault cases working closely with Denver Police Department Sex Crimes Unit.
Thank you TJ,
Mike Christoff
Principal

Thank you to all the parents that joined us at our first monthly meeting last week. We are grateful to Principal Christoff for spending time with us. There were some important topics that came up that we will be following up on at future meetings. If you couldn't join us and would like to find out what you missed, you can find the meeting minutes and recording on the PTO webpage.
We've had parents volunteer for a few of the open positions but we still need more help. We really are in need of a secretary to take meeting minutes and keep important information organized. If this is a role that calls out to you, please let us know! If a leadership role isn't for you now, we still want you to join us. Please visit the PTO page and click Join Today to let us know who you are.
We can't be Spartan Strong without you!

We don't want you to get in there and feel overwhelmed.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Ms. Tate, our Dean Instruction and GT Point of Contact at adria_tate@dpsk12.org
Our District GT Partner is Brian Beard, brian_beard@dpsk12.org, and you may receive GT newsletters from his office with internship and university opportunities.

Mental Health and Social/Emotional Tips
|
Did You Know...?
One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence.
The level of closeness and support adolescents have experienced with their parents and siblings influences the quality of their romantic relationships. If communication between parents and children is positive and supportive in early adolescence, youth are more likely to interact positively with romantic partners in late adolescence. How parents model conflict also affects their children's relationships. Experience of serious conflict within marriage can also make a child more likely to perpetrate or be victimized by dating violence, as can physical and sexual abuse in childhood.
Below is a resource to help adolescents understand their rights in dating relationships:
Dating Bill of Rights
I have the right to........
Ask for a date.
Refuse a date.
Have my own thoughts and feelings and
Communicate them.
Have my limits and values respected.
Be heard.
Set physical, emotional, and sexual boundaries.
Have friendships outside of my relationship.
Say "no."
Be safe on a date.
Be treated with respect.
Disagree with my date.
Determine who I will date.
Control my own destiny.
Get angry.
Be assertive on a date.
Leave any dating situation when I don't feel safe or it doesn't feel right for me.
Have a healthy relationship.
At TJHS: We are fortunate enough to have a partnership with END Violence as well as Denver Health. - If you are a student and are worried about yourself, a friend, or just want more information in general, OR

The class of 2022 has two faculty sponsors, Jillian Gleason and Maggie Kennedy, but parents are needed to work with the staff to plan fundraising activities. Parent sponsors also plan community building activities for the parents of the class of 2022. Each class is expected to raise money needed to host their Prom, After Prom and other activities senior year. The sooner the fundraiser get started, the more choices there will be for events senior year. The time commitment can be as little or as much you can share. Your involvement in any capacity is important and appreciated. We are successful because of your behind-the-scenes contributions, large and small. It all adds up to a stronger community. An engaged parent body shows our students that we care about them!
