McHugh Weighs In On New Way To Stop Skyscraper Sway

When a Newsweek reporter sought an expert to discuss new research that could change how skyscrapers are designed to withstand wind and seismic movement, Taylor Johnson knew just who to call. TJ connected the reporter with client McHugh Construction, which has built some of Chicago’s best-known high-rises, including The St. Regis Chicago, 1000M, NEMA Chicago, Aqua Tower and Marina City. McHugh’s Eamonn Connolly provided commentary on the study’s proposed approach of using a building’s own mass to help control movement and explained how the concept compares with existing vibration-control methods. He also weighed in on its potential implications for structural efficiency, occupant comfort, resilience and embodied carbon. Not only did Newsweek feature Connolly’s insights in the resulting article, but Yahoo! News also picked up the piece, bringing McHugh’s skyscraper expertise to an even larger national audience.
