Two co-located library and senior housing developments completed last year by Taylor Johnson client Evergreen Real Estate Group have won 2020 Library Building Awards from the American Institute of Architects and American Library Association. Built in partnership with the city of Chicago, Chicago Housing Authority and Chicago Public Library, the projects were two of four winners recognized in the U.S. and Canada. Jurors selected Independence Branch Library and Apartments, which was designed by John Ronan Architects, for its location in a diverse, mixed-income neighborhood, the educational opportunities provided for all age groups, and its thoughtful mix of materials and colors. Northtown Branch Library and Apartments, designed by Perkins and Will, was selected for its design that maximizes the potential for interaction between the apartment residents and library patrons, the developer’s commitment to energy-use reduction, and the opportunities for lifelong learning paired with a sustainable solution to the city’s housing shortage.
