Splitting The Difference: MWA On The Dual Charm And Functionality Of Dutch Doors

While we often place full-home features for longtime Taylor Johnson client  Morgante Wilson Architects (MWA), we also love to showcase the many creative design touches the firm incorporates in its projects. So, when we learned freelancer Heather Bien was writing a story about Dutch doors, which are split in half so the top and bottom can be opened together or separately, we connected her with MWA Partner Bob Zuber, knowing one of the firm’s recent renovation projects included this unique element. Armed with historical knowledge, Zuber explained the traditional function of a Dutch door to keep farm animals out while allowing breezes in. He also explained how they are used today, such as to contain pets, and how modern iterations such as a Dutch pocket door give homeowners the flexibility to choose more or less separation between two interior spaces. It’s no wonder Bien featured Zuber so prominently in her trend article for Apartment Therapy earlier this month – or that Yahoo!Life also picked up the feature.
