In our Gospel message for Sunday, Luke 10 speaks of a mission to those who have not received the message of the kingdom Jesus brings. Galatians 6 speaks to how that same message of Jesus shapes the life within the body of Christ, the church.
There is an important mission to care for those who have already received the Holy Spirit and are part of the “family of faith” (v. 10). It is important—but not easy — to give and to receive care that includes a need for correction. We are to do so with gentleness, not forgetting our temptations to sin (v. 15).
The “law of Christ” (v. 2) is to carry another’s burdens. As the Lord is our Good Shepherd, we are to shepherd one another in all humility as part of the “new creation” (v. 15). To follow this rule or principle is to share peace and mercy with others (v. 16).
When has someone gently and lovingly given you important correction and guidance in the Christian faith? How have you tried to offer that same gentle and loving care to others?
Pray:
Almighty God, thank you for your care and loving guidance. Help us to provide that same gentle and loving care to others. Amen.

"Summer"
ELC Photographer: Claire
Claire is 5 years old and this is her first time in Photo Club and her first time with a camera. This picture was taken in the Palm Dome part of the Conservatory at Como Zoo.
"This reminded me of summer," said Claire.
To take this picture she needed to go under the palm and shoot up towards the ceiling.

First, I hope everyone had a satisfying Fourth of July... just enough fireworks, including the noisy kind! In our neighborhood, people who had bought their noise-making, fun-filled purchases a few weeks early couldn't wait to hear them... always happens. I hope the family pets didn't get too unnerved at the loud bangs.
|

I have a question for you. Why is it so much fun to go back to places from our younger years and just see how they look now?
A couple of years ago my daughter and I went up to Milaca – my birthplace, and her grandma's house! Had found out who now lived there and even made plans with them to be shown the inside as it is now. It was fun to be in my old bedroom, see all the changes the present owners had made... exactly what we always wanted to do but never did!
|
|
|
Even walls had been removed, dining room expanded, etc.. For a while we corresponded, and I sent pictures of how the old place used to look.
This next week Birdman, Bird Lady (me) and daughter are traveling up to
Many Point Scout Camp
near Ponsford, MN. It's maybe a five-hour or more drive.
Why go there? Well, when Birdman was teaching and needed a summer job, we lived at
Many Point
. He ran the Trading Post (grocery, etc.) as he knew how to manage a store, having helped my dad run the local grocery store while dad and mom spent the summer camping in Europe.
We had a cabin in the staff family area. Two bunk beds, kitchen, living area, but no inside toilet. Our three kids loved being there... all fun, and nice scouts earning merit badges by helping run the Trading Post, supervising swimming, doing fun things like “Deevil Feeds!” (a nice name for eating all the watermelon you can... Grossed me out.)
Keep in mind this is from 1961 through 1963, so some 55-plus years later what has happened to the place?
Next Monday we may find out, hopefully getting inside the grounds to see how it has all changed... or not. (Why can't things just stay the same ever?) I'd love to see the inside of the cabin once more, or the ‘C’ Lodge (conservation lodge) where young doctors sometimes helped “de-scent” skunks. Several times the patient was not sufficiently anesthetized) Unbelievably bad smell that lingers.
I will tell next time what we found, as I know TLC's scout troop spent time up there. At the time the name Transfiguration didn't mean anything to us... Just another group of scouties... coming in with fresh clothes and going home the exact opposite...ewww!

During the month of July
, we will be celebrating and drawing attention to Global Health Ministries. Our involvement with GHM began during the Ebola crisis in 2014 and has continued to date. Currently, we have volunteers that share their time and talents by packing, sorting and inventorying donated medical supplies that are shipped to hospitals and clinics all over the world. Individually we can support GHM financially as one of our mission projects.
At this time, we will focus on Liberia and our mission team members who are traveling there in December. Our travelers will participate in the suitcase ministry that allows travelers to literally carry supplies in suitcases to the hospital in Liberia. A representative from GHM will be present on one of the Sundays in July to share more on their program and answer any questions you may have.
Making a difference
… shipping sea containers with a total of 2.8 million dollars in medical supplies and equipment in 2018; consulting programs for healthcare governance, leadership and management, educating leaders in nursing, medicine, administration and village health work; starting community health programs for maternal health, malaria prevention, clean water and sanitation.
Almost a century ago, in an empty field in Cameroon, a Norwegian missionary nurse prayed for God to bring a hospital. Today, in that very field stands the largest Lutheran hospital in Cameroon. Plus 3 more hospitals, 23 clinics and a dental and eye clinic that help 40,000 people a year.

Global Health Ministries procures and ships donated medical supplies and equipment to “help the hands that heal” in mission hospitals and clinics in low-resource countries. Most of these hospitals lack important medical equipment and even the most basic supplies, from bandages to exam gloves. Medical personnel are always in need of examination gloves to treat patients safely. You can help!
How can I help?
You can support the examination glove drive by purchasing and donating exam gloves and bringing them to TLC. Examination gloves can be purchased at any drug store or retail store like Target or Walmart for a cost of $6.00-$10.00 a box. Gloves should be nitrile, in sizes medium, large or universal fit.
Where will these gloves go?
Global Health Ministries sends a 40-foot container overseas every month. Shipments planned for the second half of 2019 include containers bound for Tanzania, Liberia, Zimbabwe, Cameroon and the Central African Republic. All of the gloves donated by TLC will go directly to Phebe Hospital in Liberia, West Africa – also the location of TLC sponsored CCLL (Center for Changing Lives-Liberia) and home to Liberian native Philip Nushann.

ANSWERS FROM QUIZ EARLIER IN THIS ISSUE
1) [Jesus] appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but _______" (NRSV)
Answer #4: the laborers are few.
Luke 10:1-2
.
The sending out of the seventy is mentioned only in Luke. Some versions of the ancient manuscripts say there were seventy-two instead of seventy.
Jesus had many more followers than just the 12 apostles (Acts 1:15, 1 Corinthians 15:6). Jesus sent these seventy out in pairs to prepare the way for Him and spread the Gospel message to the many towns and villages He had not yet visited personally.
2)
) "Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of _______." (NRSV)
Answer #1: wolves.
Luke 10:3-4
.
Jesus warned the seventy that they would face danger and rejection from His opponents. The urgency of the mission demanded that they travel light and not waste time with long traditional greetings of everyone they met on the road.
3)
"Whatever house you enter, first say, _______" (NRSV)
Answer #1: Peace to this house!
Luke 10:5-7
.
The pairs of disciples were to accept food and lodging from the people of the towns they visited. They were to give a traditional blessing whenever they were invited into someone's home.
4)
"Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.' But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 'Even the _______ of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.'" (NRSV)
Answer #2: dust
Luke 10:8-12
.
Jesus gave these seventy power to heal the sick while they proclaimed the coming of the kingdom of God. Jesus also warned them that they would be rejected in some towns. But that rejection would not change the truth of the Gospel; Those who rejected the message would do so at their own peril.

Changes in TLC's Transcripts publication.
|
|
There have been several discussions in recent months regarding changes to the format and production of TLC's printed publication, "Transcripts." Because our e-newsletter, "TLC Weekly" is now providing more timely and accurate information, along with links to videos and several interactive polls and surveys, we are repurposing Transcripts into a quarterly magazine publication. It will still feature articles by TLC staff, along with information pertinent to the church liturgical year, and continue to be mailed (USPS) to subscriber's home or business address.
The remainder of this year will have an August/September/October issue, and a special November/December issue focusing on the holiday season. There will be no July issue, normally in your mailboxes next week.
Thank you for your continued support, comments and suggestions for all of TLC media.
