Communications Director

Overview: The Forward Party is seeking an experienced, dynamic, entrepreneurial, and media-savvy Communications Director to be the approachable and compelling face of our movement. This role is central to shaping the narrative of the Forward Party, engaging with diverse audiences, and amplifying our mission to build a more inclusive and forward-thinking political landscape. Beyond traditional media functions, this position offers the opportunity to innovate and connect with people across platforms, including TV, podcasts, and emerging media channels. 


As Forward drives towards expanding its reach, a key element of any comms / media strategy will include evolving technology, social media, and new media. As such, the right person for this position will have familiarity operating in these areas (or, at least, experience overseeing those who do).

 

Key Responsibilities

1. Building out a New Media infrastructure 

  • Define channels, metrics for success, and strategies to engage with younger voters through the media they engage with most 
  • Implement strategies and content development that use these channels to increase Forward’s reach, through both organic and paid growth 

2. Media Engagement 

  • Represent the Forward Party in media appearances, including TV interviews, podcasts, press conferences, and public events. 
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists and media outlets to ensure consistent and favorable coverage of the Forward Party’s initiatives. 

3. Strategic Messaging 

  • Develop and oversee communication strategies that resonate with diverse audiences and align with the Forward Party’s mission and values. 
  • Collaborate with leadership and other departments to craft unified and impactful messaging. 
  • Work with volunteer groups across the country to ensure consistent messaging by Forward Party leaders and candidates 

4. Content Creation and Management 

  • Lead the creation of engaging content across digital platforms, ensuring alignment with the Forward Party’s institutional voice.
  • Manage Digital Director and Creative team to produce multimedia content, including videos, graphics, and written materials. 

5. Podcast and Emerging Channels 

  • Produce the Forward Party Podcast, including booking guests and developing themes and content for each episode and liaise with the studio. 
  • Explore and experiment with innovative communication channels to amplify the Forward Party’s message. 

6. Press Operations 

  • Oversee standard press functions, including writing press releases, coordinating press events, and managing media inquiries. 
  • Ensure readiness for rapid response to breaking news and emerging issues. 

7. Surrogate Program Management 

  • Coordinate and grow Forward’s surrogate operation, including distributing updated messaging and talking points, identifying media opportunities, and encouraging amplification of Forward messaging across surrogate social channels. 

8. Cross-Department Collaboration 

  • Partner with the political department, development department, Digital Director, Creative team, and Data teams to achieve both short-term and long-term communication goals. 


Qualifications

● Proven experience (8+ years) in communications, media relations, or public relations. 

● Experience working through new media channels, either directly or through oversight. 

● Exceptional public speaking and on-camera presence, with the ability to build rapport with diverse audiences. 

● Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to craft clear and compelling messages. 

● Familiarity with podcast production, digital platforms, and multimedia storytelling is a plus. 

● A creative, forward-thinking approach to engaging with the public.

  • Fluency in Microsoft 365, Adobe suite, and Canva.
  • Familiarity with AP style and leading internal communications tools (i.e., Cerkl, Staffbase, and SharePoint) is a plus.
  • Familiarity building PowerPoint presentations and working with digital files and assets (i.e., image resizing, cropping, etc.).
  • Spanish speaking is preferred.
  • Demonstrates understanding of and a strong interest in learning about agriculture, real estate, and consumer packaged goods (CPG) to effectively support communications strategies across diverse industries.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to proactively complete tasks and meet goals in partnership with others and under minimal supervision.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and consistency in all written, visual, and verbal communications.
  • Strong writer who identifies and develops compelling stories that support organizational goals and business initiatives.
  • Able to meet tight deadlines, adapt to change, be open to new ideas, take on new responsibilities, and embrace a growth mindset.
  • Anticipates potential issues and proposes creative, effective solutions.
  • Eagerness to strengthen and refine writing, research, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to use discretion when dealing with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Curiosity, motivation, and superior listening/comprehension skills.


Pay Range: $105,000 - $115,000 and may include a discretionary bonus. Final compensation will be dependent upon skills & experience.
