Life and Ministry Beyond Roe
July 2022

Dear Friends in Christ,
This month’s TLO Disciple focus is Life and Ministry Beyond Roe. As Christians, we rejoice over the decision of the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade and Casey in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. Abortion on Demand in our country has wreaked havoc on women and babies for 49 years. Many people across the nation have dedicated themselves to protecting the lives of the unborn leading to this decision of the Supreme Court. Let us give thanks for the ministries, organizations and individuals who have worked tirelessly to protect women and unborn children and end the travesty that resulted in the wake of the Roe decision in 1973.
Abortion is Not Over
While we thank the Lord for this decision, we must understand there is much work to be done. As members of TLO and the Body of Christ, our Lord calls all believers to use our voices to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Talk to family and friends. Abortion is not over. Get involved. Use your time, talent and treasure to make a difference for life. Share of the transcendent dignity and moral worth of every human being with all who will listen.
Life is precious. Every person is created in the image of God and therefore has eternal value. If people do not know Jesus as their Savior, they will not know their moral worth. Because we are all sinful, even from conception, we falter and fail in our own lives and in our treatment of the gift of life God has given, and in our love toward others. In baptism into the name of Jesus, God claims us as His child, purifying us, cleansing us, washing away sin and bringing us into the family of God through the blood of Jesus.
We’re Here for You
To the abortion workers, women who have had an abortion, men and women who encouraged abortion. Hear the Good News! Jesus came to forgive! His love covers over the multitude of sin. The center of the pro-life movement is love, love for the life that God gives through Jesus Christ; Love for life that God creates in the womb; love for women; and love for children who need support, love for fathers who are called to faithfulness in family and commitment to care for their sons and daughters. Jesus invites you to trust in Him for forgiveness.
Pray for Life
The Church has a wonderful opportunity to proclaim the love of Jesus to all who have been impacted by abortion. Let us lift up our voices in prayer and speak up on behalf of the vulnerable. Pray that the Dobbs decision will be the beginning of the end of the culture of death in our nation and the Lord will grant a resurgence of the culture of life, honoring and protecting life from conception through natural death. It is imperative that the Church demonstrate love and tangible support to all the women and children who will be impacted by this decision.
In God We Trust
The motto of our nation is “In God We Trust.” Formerly, the nation’s motto was “E Pluribus Unum”; “Out of Many One.” As we celebrate the nation’s freedoms on July 4, let us give thanks to God for the freedoms we enjoy: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And begin rebuilding a Culture of Life in our nation.

Statement from LCMS Life Ministry on the
‘Dobbs v. Jackson’ ruling
THE LCMS
June 24, 2022
Life Ministry of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) applauds the action of the U.S. Supreme Court to correct the egregious and mortal error codified in Roe v. Wade. We now encourage each state government to follow suit by passing and administering laws that protect human life. The people of the LCMS will continue to pray for the government and all in authority, that we might all live peaceful and quiet lives (1 Tim. 2:1–2).
We rejoice that the truth of God’s desire for His creation was reflected in the court’s consideration and decision issued in Dobbs v. Jackson. God’s Word and natural law together teach that life is precious and death is the enemy of all living things. Killing violates our being as humans and cannot be sought as a solution or option for individuals. The lie of abortion has caused immeasurable harm to our society and reinforced a utilitarian view of life at the expense of our children. God sent His Son, Jesus, to be born as a human. His baptism, perfect life, death and resurrection on behalf of every sinner gives eternal life to all who believe and drives Christians to love and treasure our neighbor with the same love from the heavenly Father. Roe V. Wade Overturned!
Lutherans For Life
June 24, 2022
Lutherans For Life rejoices that an egregious injustice has been rectified. Thanks be to God for the Supreme Court’s reversal of the erroneous Roe v. Wade decision! Our nation and culture owe a great debt of gratitude to fifty years of Gospel-motivated voices For Life. Their faithful witness of courage and compassion has influenced successive generations to acknowledge the reality that God creates, redeems, and calls every human life to be His own precious treasure from fertilization to forever. And we delight to receive each one as a gift and a privilege.
Nevertheless, we recognize that significant labor remains. Attention turns from one court and one congress to fifty of them. Neighbors will continue experiencing surprise pregnancies. The devil will keep deceiving the public into viewing death as a solution to suffering. Millions among us still need relief from the guilt and healing from the grief over their part in abortion. The Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health verdict does not mandate the sanctity of unborn life but merely makes the federal government neutral. Even if federal policy did protect the endangered ones, it still falls to us as citizens to ensure that our communities reflect it in actual practice. Laws and leaders can foster good and forbid evil, but only the truth of God’s Word and the love of the Body of Christ can change hearts and save lives.
So, we rededicate ourselves all the more intently to speaking truth and showing love to the one right in front of us. Our nationwide network of life-minded servants remains committed to embodying and encouraging gentle relentlessness in an inevitably volatile environment. We pledge ourselves not to allow our fellowship to become apathetic following this positive development. And we are already undertaking to improve and expand our equipping of Gospel-motivated voices to declare and demonstrate the grace of God in Jesus Christ to all members of our race, no matter what age, appearance, or ability. May He bless our land, our authorities, and our people to have life and share it abundantly!

LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison addresses SCOTUS decision
By Matthew Harrison
LCMS President
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).
Today is a monumental day, a day on which we simultaneously rejoice, pray, give thanks, lament, repent and weep. The Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade and returned the responsibility for protecting life to the states. “Held: The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives” (SCOTUS, Dobbs v. Jackson, 1).
“[The Lord] has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate” (Luke 1:52).
Today is also the Church’s feast day, the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ. These two events are a happy convergence.
Today we celebrate the birth of the one who, before he was born, leaped in joyful Spirit-inspired confession when his mother met the mother of his unborn Lord. Today we take comfort in our Lord’s unborn forerunner and in the unborn Savior. We also rejoice at the resounding victory for life in the United States. Many of us long doubted it would ever come. The Lord has had mercy upon us, even us, sinners all, even in these times. Read more

Joint letter from LCMS President Harrison and presidents of WELS and ELS to U.S. Attorney General
June 24, 2022
Dear Attorney General Garland and Assistant Attorney General Clarke:
As presidents of three Lutheran Christian church bodies that vigorously support the rule of law, justice and legal protection for all people—especially the least, the weakest, the unborn—we are writing about the increased violence that has occurred following the leaked draft of the Supreme Court opinion concerning Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. These acts of violence against churches, pro-life organizations and pregnancy centers are clearly terrorist attacks: they use violence designed to intimidate in order to achieve political ends. Tearing Us Apart:
How Abortion Harms Everything
and Solves Nothing
With the Supreme Court poised to return abortion law to the democratic process, a powerful new book reframes the coming debate: Our fifty-year experiment with unlimited abortion has harmed everyone—even its most passionate proponents.
Women, men, families, the law, politics, medicine, the media—and, of course, children (born and unborn)—have all been brutalized by the culture of death fostered by Roe v. Wade. Abortion hollows out marriage and the family. It undermines the rule of law and corrupts our political system. It turns healers into executioners and "women's health" into a euphemism for extermination.
Ryan T. Anderson, a compelling and reasoned voice in our most contentious cultural debates, and the pro-life journalist Alexandra DeSanctis expose the false promises of the abortion movement and explain why it has made everything worse. Five decades after Roe, everyone has an opinion about abortion. But after reading Tearing Us Apart, no one will think about it in the same way.

What is the Chemical Abortion Procedure?
Throughout the past several years, Corporate Abortion and its well-funded political allies deliberately took advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic and used it to advance chemical abortion in our nation. Finally, in December 2021, their sly efforts paid off and the FDA gutted health and safety standards for chemical abortion drugs. Now, abortion vendors can ship the life-ending pills in the mail without having to take the time or spend the money to be sure that women wouldn’t be harmed, made infertile, or die after taking them.
Chemical abortion pills end preborn lives and have caused the deaths of at least 26 women, in addition to causing thousands of confirmed hospitalizations.
