2020 -- WORST YEAR FOR JOBS IN ILLINOIS' HISTORY
Illinois lost 423,300 jobs during 2020 – a history-making drop. The state saw 6.9% of its jobs evaporate – the worst year on record. Jobs losses were felt in nearly every sector of the state economy, including manufacturing, which saw a 4% drop. Below is a chart showing the change in non-farm payrolls, mid-December 2019 to mid-December 2020, seasonally adjusted. Source: Illinois Department of Employment Security - created with Datawrapper. More information HERE.
While overall Illinois lost 2,500 (-0.04%) in December, some sectors continued to recover, including manufacturing, which added 2,400 jobs. Below is a chart showing the change in Illinois non-farm employment by sector, mid-November to mid-December 2020. Source here. More information HERE.
EXTENDED UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT CLAIMS ARE NOT FRAUDULENT CLAIMS
You may now be receiving claims for individuals who have not worked for you since 2019 or early 2020. This is because those individuals have exhausting their regular unemployment insurance benefits and are switching to an Extended Benefits program. This generates a new claim notice from IDES to the employer with a new claim number. Employers need to respond with very basic employment information, such as dates of employment, job title, rate of pay, location, average hours worked per week, and simple reason for separation. No separation details or additional documentation needs to be provided. More info HERE. Enroll HERE.
CEO CONFIDENCE CLIMBS IN JANUARY
Polling by "Chief Executive" finds the nation’s CEOs with a somewhat bright outlook for the future. (see graphic below). CEOs’ outlook for the business environment 12 months from now is essentially flat from December but up 9% since the bottom of COVID last spring. An increasing number of CEOs are expecting 2021 to be a year of growth, with 72 percent expecting gains in profits and 75 percent anticipating gains in revenue. More HERE.
CARNEGIE STUDY: AMERICANS OK PAYING MORE TO TRADE WITH DEMOCRACIES
Americans are willing to pay more for consumer goods if they are sourced from countries that share their values a report by the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs says. They’re also willing to pay more for products that are not made by forced labor, or produced under unfair trade practices long known as the competitive edge that has helped China dominate global supply chains. The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) sent a memo to the Biden administration recommending that the new President focus upon rebuilding production of goods and supply chains across America. "The era of offshoring should end. Nearshoring cannot substitute for the economic power of onshoring. Building jobs and purchasing power should prevail over the importation of cheap goods.
