Season's greetings to TMA members and colleagues across Europe! As we cross the finish line of another year filled with challenges for turnaround professionals, I am proud of the strides our community has made.
Despite the obstacles caused by the pandemic, TMA members continued to find opportunities to connect with each other, learn, and grow as professionals. We continued to hold engaging, dynamic virtual events such as the 2021 Annual European, and some of our chapters were at long last able to reunite in-person, for example, at last month’s TMA UK Annual Conference.
|
TMA Global and European leaders also met last month (as pictured here) to discuss strategy and exchange ideas on the vision for TMA Europe and the growing number of European chapters—the latest additions in 2021 being TMA France, which already has nearly 100 members, and TMA Switzerland. The board has been expanded for 2022 and beyond with additional committees created to better support and drive forward Chapter Relations & Communications, Sponsorship & Events, Education & Certification, TMA’s Network of Women and NextGen. We want our communications and events to better connect chapters and members across Europe and more widely share our milestones and achievements.
As we head into the festive season, I hope everyone has a chance to rest and spend time with loved ones. I look forward to another year of exciting achievements for TMA Europe and wish you a safe and prosperous 2022!

UK Family Businesses Often Blind to Causes of Their Decline
|
|
From the October edition of the Journal of Corporate Renewal.
Family businesses offer a unique perspective in business management, which is often anything but textbook, exhibiting many attributes which often are at the root cause of their demise. Many of those attributes are common features of family businesses worldwide and don’t just apply to those in the UK. Failure, too, is often devastating for all concerned, particularly for the family members who have much emotional and monetary capital invested in the business succeeding.
Family businesses are a significant part of the UK's economy, with three-quarters of all business being conducted through family- or owner-managed businesses. And yet they are probably the least understood. This article is not intended to provide a comprehensive list of family-owned businesses’ pitfalls but a consideration of the more common themes.

Congratulations are in order to TMA Romania, who received TMA Global's 2021 International Chapter Excellence Award! The chapter was honored during a special ceremony at the 2021 TMA Annual in October.
The International Chapter Award recognises one chapter that has excelled at the implementation of forward-thinking ideas, innovation, creativity, member value, and engagement within the global TMA community, either within the chapter itself or by partnering with another chapter or TMA programme to add member value.

Featured Member: Carlo Bacchetta
|
|
TMA Europe wouldn't be the powerful community it is without the contributions of members across chapters and the entire continent. This quarter, we'd like to recognize Carlo Bacchetta, Studio Palmeri Commercialisti Associati (TMA Italy).
"Carlo Bacchetta is an active member of TMA Italy, and a member of the board as treasurer. He has a factual approach to his work, never stepping back on any task the board has to deliver. Carlo is an important pillar of the association," said Enrica Maria Ghia, Studio Legale Ghia (TMA Italy) of his contributions to the chapter.
Keep up the excellent work! We're #TMAProud of our members who go above and beyond for the association and industry.

|
|
On Sept. 30, TMA Europe hosted the 2021 Annual European online, bringing together turnaround professionals from across the European continent and the globe for a chance to connect with industry peers and learn from top experts. The online format offered plenty of opportunities for interaction and networking among attendees, and in addition to keynote and general sessions, industry case studies, and technical panels, attendees also had the chance to participate in TMA Connect roundtables, and experience some fun gamification elements as well!

The event received plenty of buzz online as well, from both speakers and attendees.
"Thank you TMA Europe and the teams that put together another successful event to bring all of our colleagues together," said Ron J Reuter, CTP, RJ Reuter Business Consulting (TMA Connecticut) on LinkedIn.
"It was a pleasure to host the first roundtable "Taking Gaming and the Cloud to New Levels" with Jean-Baptiste Kempf, former CTO of Blade Shadow, the major contributor to the VideoLAN project as well as to the VLC software, and a well-known figure in Open Source," said Arnaud Pédron, Franklin société d'avocats.
With 13 chapters, TMA Europe is the largest TMA presence outside North America and a significant portion of the almost 10,000 TMA members worldwide. TMA Europe continues to grow with chapters being established in France and Switzerland. The next TMA Europe Annual European is scheduled to be held in Madrid in June 2022.
If you were not able to attend the conference, you can still view session recordings from the event! Here are a few of our top picks:
