Staff rep Steve Torgerson received a call from an individual requesting help with some big problems on his EI claim. After asking a few questions, Steve was surprised to learn that the caller was a union member, but he wasn't a member of GSU. It seems a former GSU member had suggested GSU reps were the best source of assistance when you needed help with an EI claim, so Steve got the call.

Steve offered the help he could before putting the caller in touch with Mark Crawford from the Unemployed Workers' Centre in Regina.

GSU is pleased to offer $2,000 scholarships to five students who demonstrate an ability and a passion to inspire positive change in their community. 

Scholarships are available to all GSU members and their immediate families - including spouses - who are enrolled in a diploma, degree, or certificate program at a community college, university, trade school, or technical institute as a full-time student in any country. 

Deadline for receipt of applications is June 1, 2017.

Discovery Co-op

Union and company representatives met in North Battleford on March 3 with the assistance of conciliator Ken Eckert. Although each side proposed a compromise, ultimately they were not able to reach an agreement. 

The conciliator will be reporting out of the negotiations and the parties will begin a two-week waiting period before either side has the right to lock out or strike. The parties are free to continue negotiations during this two-week period, if they choose.
