40 Years Celebrated in La Jolla
The Masonry Society (TMS) celebrated it's 40th Year during it's meetings in La Jolla, California earlier this month with historic presentations on the creation of the Society, a Commemorative Program highlighting the successes and growth of the Society, and much more.

The Masonry Society would like to thank the attendees, committee members, Chairs, helpers, presenters, advertisers, and sponsors for making this one of the most memorable meetings ever. Click here for report on actions from the meetings and read more below.

TMS Journal to be Indexed and Abstracted
The Masonry Society is pleased to report that TMS Journal, the only peer reviewed journal focused on masonry in the United States, will be indexed and abstracted in Emerging Sources Citation Index by Clarivate Analytics. TMS has worked for a number of years to have the journal cited, recognizing the importance to scholars and researchers. The next issue of TMS Journal, which will be published in December, will be the first issue indexed by Clarivate Analytics. Sponsorship Opportunity for 2018 Sustainability E-News
The Masonry Society is now accepting sponsorships for its popular Sustainability E-News, which is developed by Christine Subasic , to keep the industry, practi tioners, and others updated on issues related to sustainability, resiliency, energy, and more. Published twice per month, Sustainability E-News provides positive frequent exposure to sponsors. It is sent directly to over 3300 subscribers by TMS, and it is received/viewed by many more as it is distributed and posted by many other organizations. Sponsorship rates are also very reasonable, starting at only $ 250/year and going up to the platinum level at just $1500 for the year. To become a sponsor or to renew sponsorship, contact TMS before year's end.

Educators' Workshop Scheduled at University of South Florida on March 11-13
The Masonry Society, with the support of the Masonry Association of Florida, the Florida Concrete and Products Association, the Brick Industry Association, the International Masonry Institute, the National Concrete Masonry Association, the Portland Cement Association, and other organizations, will host a 2018 Masonry Educators' Workshop  to be held at the University of South Florida in beautiful Tampa, Florida on March 11-13. Dr. Rajan Sen who is a Professor and Jefferson Science Fellow at USF will serve as the workshop host.

The Masonry Educator's workshop (MEW) was formerly called the University Professors' Masonry Workshop (UPMW) but was recently renamed to be clear that educators other than university professors are welcome. The Workshop is designed to assist educators with creating or offering masonry courses so that students will be positively exposed to masonry and feel more comfortable with it when used on their projects. Educational sessions on masonry design, detailing and construction will be presented, panel discussions on a number of topics are planned, and a hands-on masonry laying activity will be offered. Additional details on the program will be posted here as they become available later this fall.  

Structures Congress Registration Open

As reported in earlier e-newsletters, The Masonry Society (TMS) will be hosting a booth (#620) and sponsoring a technical sessions at the 2018 SEI Structures Congress that will be held in Fort Worthv Texas from April 19-21.  Registration for the Structures Congress is now open, and we hope that if you attend, that you'll stop by TMS's booth to say hello.  

 
As a BIM-M (Building Information Modelling for Masonry) sponsor, TMS received a software license for the revolutionary, new Autodesk REVIT add-in titled MasonryiQ. Sponsors and industry members are awarding licenses to select architects, engineers and contractors who are major masonry designers and users. Board Approves Changes to Fellow Process
At the recent Annual Meeting, the Board of Directors approved changes to the process by which TMS Members are nominated for, and consideration for Fellow distinction based on recommendations from the Awards Committee and discussions at the meetings. The changes include updates to reflect changes in technology and process as well as two substantive changes. Click here for additional information on these changes.

TMS currently has 37 Fellow Members. The deadline for submission of Fellows Nomination Packages is February 1st of each year.

Updated Direct Design Handbook Published
With the approval of the Board of Directors and the Technical Activities Committee, the Design Practices Committee has published a new version of the Direct Design Handbook (TMS 403-17), that based on the strength design provisions of the 2013 TMS 402/602. The provisions have been substantially revised and shortened from previous editions of the standard and it now provides a framework procedure on how to design reinforced concrete and clay structures.


Mark Your Calendar for TMS Spring Meeting
As you plan for 2018, please make sure to mark your calendars for the TMS Spring meeting in New Orleans from April 5-7. TMS will will trying a new   compressed schedule that is intended to reduce the time out of the office by attendees, while still providing sufficient time to conduct important business of the society. We hope to see you there!

Ed Huston (TMS Fellow), principal of Smith & Huston Inc. Consulting Engineers, received the Susan M. Frey NCSEA Educator Award. The award established to honor the memory of Sue Frey, who was a TMS Member and was recognized as an extraordinary educator, was presented to Huston for his expertise in presenting practical instruction to engineers and others on a broad range of technical topics. To forward TMS emails, E-Newsletter, and Announcements that are sent via Constant Contact, use the Forward button at the bottom of the newsletters to ensure that if one of your contacts hits the "Unsubscribe" button at the bottom, that they don't unsubscribe you. The problem with the Forward button though is that it only allows you to Forward to a limited number of email addresses (7). For longer lists, you may have to do this several times. Alternatively, you could Forward the email with a personal note at the top, explaining that if they do not wish to receive the TMS forwarded messages from you, that they contact you directly to be removed from your particular email list.
