A Message From Our Principal

Dear Tolt Families,

We had a great assembly yesterday featuring our student vs. staff volleyball game. Our 8th grade volleyball players were victorious over our staff team, and our jazz band helped establish an atmosphere with lots of positive energy. Our student body was respectful, cheered for both teams, and showed lots of Tolt Bear spirit. We all had a lot of fun!

We have been working on ways to lighten student backpacks. This morning, students learned they can keep their planners at home and store composition notebooks and math workbooks in classrooms when they do not need them that night. Students were encouraged to minimize the number of reading/library books they carry and to regularly clean out their backpack. Students in Tolt athletics may check out a locker in our locker rooms during their sports season. Your help at home to reinforce what students are hearing at school about ways to keep their backpack at a manageable weight would also be helpful.

The end of 1st quarter is coming up on Thursday, November 10. It is helpful for parents and guardians to check their student's grades in Skyward Family Access on a weekly basis with their student so they can track their grades and know if they have any missing assignments. Please reach out directly to teachers with questions about their classes. For assistance with Skyward log in information, contact Kim Piira at piirak@rsd407.org.

Thank you for all your support as we work together to support our amazing students!

Go Bears!

Tolt Highlights

Our First Assembly (in a very LONG time!)

Thursday, October 27, marks a special date for Tolt Middle School. Our long time tradition of Tolt staff versus 8th grade volleyball game was a hit (or jump, set, spike)! The assembly was filled with fun, laughter, cheering, and even some serious competitive game play. We are pleased to announce that our 8th grade girls volleyball team won!  Go Tolt Bears Volleyball!

Tolt 6th Grade Social Studies

Here at Tolt Middle School, sixth grade Social Studies students are learning to be young leaders and advocates for their community! Students in Social Studies are working with their peers to develop a park that positively impacts the public, while carefully keeping multiple stakeholders in mind. Here you can see students presenting and defending their proposed park designs for T-117 during a class-run Port Commissioner meeting. After careful consideration and critical thinking, the Port Commissioners then determine which design best meets the community and environmental needs of T-117. Some T-117 park proposals include a Duwamish Tribe heritage museum, salmon hatchery, salmon education center, and community garden. We can't wait to see what is next for our 6th graders!

Tolt Robotics Class

Students in Mr. McFarland's Robotics class completed their robot animal projects last week. The classroom came alive with adorable critters--beeping, rolling, biting, wagging, and more! These student-designed animals incorporated a variety of sensors (ultrasonic, touch, color, and gyro) that allowed the animals to react to their environment in ways that the students programmed. Everyone had a great time showing off their electronic friends and discovering how the robots would respond to them. Nobody is looking forward to taking their new friends apart!

TMS Inclusionary Advisory Team

Tolt Middle School Inclusionary Advisory Team had their first meeting of the school year on October 12. It was a productive time as students, parents, and staff discussed ideas and brought up important questions. Meeting Minutes can be viewed here.

Cedarcrest Halloween Event

Nurse's Corner

Tolt will be holding our annual state required hearing and vision screening for 7th graders on Thursday, November 3rd from 8:30AM-3PM! If your student wears glasses/ contacts, make sure they have their glasses and/or contacts with them on November 3rd for screening.

Cold/Flu/Respiratory season is upon us and is expected to be worse and start sooner this year. We also expect another COVID surge this winter due to changing variants.

Some ways to help keep students healthy and decrease the number of school days missed:

1.     Keep up to date with Flu and COVID vaccines. The COVID bivalent boosters are now available for everyone 5 and up. For more information, please visit https://kingcounty.gov/depts/health/covid-19/vaccine/distribution.aspx

2.     KEEP YOUR STUDENT HOME IF THEY ARE SICK! This helps prevent the spread of viruses to other classmates and allows them to rest and recover quicker. Per district policy any student with diarrhea, vomiting, or a fever above 100 F cannot return until symptom free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication.

3.     Encourage your student to keep hands away from their nose, mouth, and eyes. This is how germs get into our body.

4.     Review respiratory etiquette with your student. If they cough or sneeze, they should cough or sneeze into their elbow. If they have snot in their nose, they should use a Kleenex to blow their nose, throw it in the trash, and immediately wash their hands afterwards.

5.     Get plenty of rest, exercise, and eat a balanced diet. This helps improve our immune system allowing our body to fight off illnesses or recover from them more quickly.

6.     For more information on prevention and treatment of the flu visit https://www.cdc.gov/flu/index.htm

7.     For current information on COVID guidelines and resources visit https://kingcounty.gov/depts/health/covid-19.aspx

Wishing you all a safe, healthy, and fun Halloween!

Thank you for helping us keep everyone at school healthy!
