A Message From Our Principal

Dear Tolt Families,

We ended this week with a wonderful Veteran’s Day Assembly. Thanks to our Symphonic Band, 7/8 Choir, and Yearbook class, for planning this time for our school community. Below in "Tolt Highlights" are pictures to help you to get a sense of our time together this afternoon.

Today was the last day of first quarter, and second quarter starts next Monday. Since 6th graders will have at least one new class starting next week, they received a copy of their second quarter schedule today. The start of second quarter means a fresh start for all students in their classes and the opportunity to set new goals.

During the morning announcements this week, students have been reminded of the Tolt Bear Way (be respectful, responsible, and safe) while riding the school bus. Riding the bus to and from school is a privilege and students who make the bus feel unsafe for other students or drivers will lose their privilege. Furthermore, in addition to bus consequences, there can also be school consequences. If your student rides the bus, you can help by reviewing our bus expectations with them.

Scores from this fall’s MAP tests and last spring’s SBA and WCAS exams are now available. Your student’s Smarter Balance Assessment scores are located in Skyward Family Access under Test Scores and/or Portfolio sections. The below letter shares how to access your student’s report for last spring’s SBA (English language arts and math) and WCAS (science for current 6th graders) exams. Please keep in mind that these scores are snapshots of your student’s academic progress, and classroom assignments and assessments provide much more information about their learning.

Have a great three-day weekend.

Go Bears!

Amie Karkainen, Principal

November 4, 2022

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Your student’s results from the spring 2022 state tests are available to view in Skyward. To view the score report, log into your Skyward Family Access account, click “Portfolio” on the left side menu, then open the pdf file labeled “2022 Spring SBA and WCAS.”

In spring 2022, students in grades 3-8 and 10 took the Smarter Balanced (SBA) or the Washington Access to Instruction & Measurement (WA-AIM) English language arts (ELA) and math tests. Students in grades 5, 8 and 11 took the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) or WA-AIM science. These assessment results fulfill state and federal requirements to understand how districts and the state are doing in meeting all students’ learning needs.

State tests provide a snapshot of a student’s performance on the given assessment. Ongoing classroom information such as daily assignments and tests provide a more complete picture of your student’s skills and knowledge. The state assessment results can help all of us work together to pursue additional support or accelerated opportunities that may benefit your student’s learning.

If you have any questions about your student’s score report, please reach out to your principal. For more information about state tests and the learning standards they assess, visit these websites: Assessment Resources, Starting Smarter, and State Testing.

Sincerely,

Kristin Edlund

Director of Teaching and Learning

Tolt Highlights

Tolt Veteran's Day Assembly

Tolt students and staff enjoyed a wonderful Veteran's Day assembly planned by our Yearbook, Symphonic Band and 7/8 Choir classes. Our Symphonic Band and 7/8 Choir made the assembly extra special with songs to honor our veterans. A special thank you to Eric Orman--one of our Tolt parent veterans--for delivering a poignant message to our school at our Veteran's Day assembly!

Cardboard Arcade!

Mrs. Loewen's 6th grade Discovery Engineering class hosted a Cardboard Arcade here at Tolt. It was inspired by Caine's Arcade (Caine's Arcade - YouTube). Students first watched the video and then created their own arcade games using cardboard, tape and paint. They worked together in collaborative groups or pairs to create their games over the course of a few weeks. During the build process, students assessed their progress and set the Grand Opening Date.

The Grand Opening of our Cardboard Arcade was a blast! Students shared their unique and creative ideas that were brought to life with parents and members of the school community. It was a great time for everyone. Way to go, 6th grade Discovery Engineering!

Cedarcrest High School DECA Event

Nurse's Corner

We continue to see large numbers of students with cold symptoms, stomach issues, and feeling unwell being at school. Your student needs to stay home until any symptoms of cold, stomach virus, or general wellbeing are significantly improved and must be fever free for 24 hours without any fever-reducing medications. If your student has COVID symptoms, they should obtain a COVID test and notify Nurse Rachel with a positive result. Please keep your student home until they are well enough to be at school and learning!

Our hearing and vision screening was a fabulous success! Thank you so much to all who helped make this happen. Over the next week, Nurse Rachel will be sending out any potential referrals based on screening results. If you need support with finding an eye doctor, audiologist, and obtaining glasses for your student Nurse Rachel can help! Reach out for any potential support needs so we can make sure your student is hearing and seeing to the best of their abilities.

The “Hidden in Plain Sight” initiative helps parents/caregivers spot signs of at-risk behaviors, using an interactive display of a teenager's bedroom. This exhibit educates and empowers participants to communicate with their children about at-risk behaviors and expectations. A strong parent/guardian-teen relationship is one of the most effective tools to prevent youth substance use.

This event is accompanied by a Community Resource Fair and hosted by Empower Youth Network. This is a parent/caregiver only event. View the flyer here for more information: Hidden In Plain Sight 2022 FINAL.pdf
